So general consensus is 07-08’s have same adhesive as 01-05 996tt’s, and 09’s have enhanced adhesive being impervious to failures?

Recently just lost my engine due to two lines popping off after driving over road debris at wot. Engine is toast and I’m looking into getting a 997.1 or .2 tt.

Curious as to how the engine is toast? Did the engine overheat tremendously after the coolant failure?

The cylinder head gasket fails, the freeze plugs also loosen up in the cylinder heads. The cost of new or replacement parts like cylinder heads, cylinder water jackets and cylinder liners with labor put you at $15 to 25K (one or both banks)

I guess the stakes of a coolant pipe dump are higher than I thought. I figured as long as you caught it quickly and didn't severely overheat the engine, worst case was a tow + the usual $3-4k pinning or welding procedure.

Does this happen every time the coolant pipes fail or only if you overheat the engine?

You will lose your head gasket if the engine overheats.
The cost to repair these engines and replace new parts is 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of these cars..
If you do not re-glue AND pin the coolant fittings you do have the RISK since the glue/bond is aging.

WARNING >>If you see the coolant level warning light TURN IGNITION SWITCH OFF.. COAST and do not restart the engine for ANY reason..
You can practice this situation on the road or parking lot or XYZ..

2008 and no failure at 38,000 miles.

What build date did they start using the better glue?

See posts 10 and 14 on this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-turb...ich-years.html

The pdf is not currently available, but evidently the change was made is February of 2008. From the linked thread:

"Short term countermeasures (improved employee training) were implemented by the supplier in July 2007 and by late January 2008 the supplier had introduced an automated metering device for application of adhesive on pipe adapters. ODI estimates that vehicles produced after February 2008 should have parts produced using the new process"

My data points:
2003 996 Turbo sold in 2015 with 51,xxx miles - no coolant pipe issues when sold.
2008 997 Turbo (7/2008 build date) 26,xxx miles currently - no coolant pipe issues yet.

So my build date of 03/01/08 was right in the edge of the changeover. Let’s hope I have the updated epoxy process.

997.2 does not have these issues. Porsche realized the Mezger power plant needed revision. Hence the DFI power plant. Zero issues with this configuration across all model platforms.

The late 08/09 cars seem to have fared well so far but I can't help but think that any formulation of glue could be prone to leaking after years of heat cycling and drying out. It just doesn't seem like a great design choice regardless of the adhesive.
