The 996 GT3 street car had the full steel synchros from the cup car. It was super noticeable especially compared to the brass synchronizer feel of the 993TT. Having driven both, that was a huge evolution. The 993TT has a slightly looser or rubberized end of travel where the 996GT3 felt more like the bolt action metallic snapping into place of a rifle. 997GT3 feels just like the 996GT3 but the transmission is reinforced due to more power. 381hp vs 405-450hp. The 3.8RS had shorter gear ratios for better on track acceleration. The 4.0RS had reinforced pressure plate and ancillary bolts etc above the 3.8 but is basically the same short ratio gearbox. Fwiw when the 2007RS debuted- people had the SAME complaint that the recent GT4 has- gears are too long. Of course if you are on track and running it at 6000+ rpm the ratios don't matter. You just hear the noise which is awesome. Other than the GT3 stop sale (because of THREE bad engines) what is the last driveline component that Porsche messed up? I didn't think the Pdk would be great. Drove the 991 Turbo S on track. Loved it. I felt stupid for doubting them. Drove GT3 and GT3RS and they are even better. The R will shift great. It will be GREAT. The next Gt3/ GT2 etc will all be great. Porsche does it all right.

Agree with feel of the gearbox differences. As owner of 993tt, 996rs, 996mk2 and 4.0 the evolution of the gearbox and feel is nothing short of amazing. Drove the 993tt today and it feels like whipping cream compared to the 4.0s short rifle like feel.

I prefer the longer throws in the 996 compared to the 4.0 but probably has a lot to do with usage. I drive the 996 all the time and 4.0 sits in a garage across the Atlantic Ocean.

Porsche suffers from the same problems as other manufacturers when it comes to early production issues.
I used to track 996mk1 10 years ago and that gear box was not as solid as gen2.

Just like you I like to wait and buy used after all the small issues have been solved. Or buy gen 2 stuff.

The 991gt3 has its own issues, just like previous models.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 991gt3 with a G engine. Most small issues should be fixed by now.
991gen2 gt3 PDK or MT as option will be amazing. 9k redline or not.

AFAIK the 996.2 GT3 sychros, whilst stainless steel are not the same as the cup car parts? At least, the street car only had steel in gear 1-3?? I just had my box rebuilt with the motorsport items and its notchier than it was before at low speeds - effort required!

I owned a 911 that I supercharged, Tubi exhaust etc. Over 500 HP by the time it was modified. That was one fast car when it was done. Working on a Boxster with Hardtop now. Wonder how fast it can go? Time will tell.
