I have owned a 997 4.0 RS for 4 years and absolutely am I love with the car. As I have said many times before that it is so engaging and pure perfection. But I have been curious and intrigued by the new 991 RS having read all the rave reviews and watching the demand skyrocket. So.......On thanksging morning a friend of mine brought over his new orange 991 RS for a quick romp through LA's canyons and Mulholland drive. Before the drive we both took a few minutes to admire both of these special machines and took a few photos. The 991 RS is definitely a muscular beast and nicely finished on the inside. About halfway through the drive my friend suggested we switch cars. Prior to this, nobody had driven my 4.0 but I couldn't resist the opportunity. The first thing that struck me about the 991 RS was how absolutely different it felt from my 997 in almost every way. It was very smooth and felt almost luxury GT like. To begin with, the engine had a different character that sounded and felt a little more production like and not as race car like as the Mezger. It felt less engaging and the 997 4.0 seemed to pull harder in each gear. This didn't surprise me as it has virtually the same hp and torque and is almost 200 lbs lighter. The PDK in the 991 is very quick, but I don't know if I will ever fall in love with a two pedal car for pure fun. The steering on the 991 also felt more disengaged and had less tactile feedback. Yes the longer wheelbase was very balanced but felt much less 911 like in a way that felt foreign. I also felt more of the electronic instrusions with regard to suspension and handling in the 991, more digital vs analog. When I switched back to the 4.0 RS it right away felt much more exciting, engaging and pure 911 perfection. While the new 991 RS is a superb performer, my temptation to possibly switch to something newer and improved quickly came to an end that morning, and sealed in my mind that the 997 RS's will become an iconic 911.

I normally do not read posts without indentation, but I'm glad I did.
Without driving either, I interpret most peoples impression as this: With both having PDKs only, the new RS is a nice Turbo alternative, meaning that buyers are cross shopping both -- realizing the RS avoids the massive depreciation and still checks the boxes.
At least that is my theory on why there are more buyers than slots. I can walk up and buy a turbo today if I wanted, but that doesn't mean I will...

My impressions exactly after driving a 991 GT3 (non RS).
Keep the unicorn and enjoy it well. 991RS add if you must!

Just have to wait until the craiziness lays down with the 991rs.

Likewise. I need a PDKS in the garage, just not at the prices they are trading currently. I'm having too much fun with my RS and the air cooled cars I've picked up...
