One of my fellow Porsche friends made a comment about Porsche's in general. Each new model year that comes out will inevitably offer better performance and capabilities and it will bring something new and different to the experience. It doesn't mean the older cars aren't worth owning because they maintain their own identity and uniqueness which can't be matched by former or current offerings. The conclusion was that we need one of each model.

my logic:
long hoods - looks awesome, very expensive and drive like really old cars
G body - I like the bumpers, enough old to feel antique but modern enough they don't feel like they're going to kill you every corner. very reliable from mid-80s on, EFI I like. Carbs fun but a pain.
964 - Awesome mix of old and new, fast powerful engine, with light enough car, much better front suspension, more civilized but some $ can fix that and make it more raw dog the way i like
993 - keep it. looks squished to me. ok i wouldn't kick a GT2 out of bed but the cars got fat, squishy looking
996 - Meh! GT3 is ok, but those lights. and cheap interior. but i do like the skinny body
997 - Any GT model will do, feels more like my 964 than you'd think. :-) I just love wrapping this thing out on the track, its so much fun
991- Hmmm.... not sure at this point
GT4 - well it's not a 911 but it is awesome.

So yes, 1 of each, but I'll skip the 993 and 996. Maybe a 912 to get my SWB long hood on.

I'm going to give you a reason to rethink your position on 993s

As much as I'm anticipating my 991, I'm certain it will never be half as special as a 7RS. And mine's just a 3.8 not 4.0.

The loss of feel is gonna be the 991's undoing. Sure it's faster than before, but fast alone doesn't win the day. There are faster and more feelsome things. I honestly think PAG has created a product that falls NEATLY through the cracks. Not as fast as its fast contemporaries, nor as feelsome as its own stablemates (GT4 and all GT predecessors)

I'm already struggling to come up with a reason to keep the 1. And I haven't even taken delivery...

Try a 996 RS. It WILL change your view. I couldn't care enough to bat an eyelid once...

996rs is SO right.
all i did was sit in it, and that was that. it's perfect.
it was conceived, designed and built by people in love with their work.
the new versions today are built by people just doing their job.

Yes, I like the gt model and if an rs could be had here it would be on the list.

993 - it was easy on the eyes (to me) but I MUCH preferred the driving dynamics of the 964 RSA that preceded it. IMO the 964 was the Sweet Spot of the air cooled Porsches but that's just my opinion. Every version had it's strengths and weaknesses. That is still the case to this day.

RS4.0 feels like a noisy uncomfortable proper racing car.
991 RS feels way more comfortable and clearly a car you can DD.

Interestingly the LWB in the RS4.0 are more comfortable than the 918 LWB despite the fact you can adjust the height. Has to do with the angle that seems more upright.

They are both amazing and in an ideal world you would want both. Very different driving experience. DD the 991RS, take the RS4.0 out for a spirited weekend drive. As for the track the question is still open.

So actually not much of a differenece performance wise if I read you right? So a normal GT3 (like mine) with a 3.9, complete upgraded suspension, Guards LSD and upgraded brakes would be a nice "cheap" alternative when it comes to just looking at track speed or road driving experience then.

Interesting to hear this. Did they resolve the shoulder area on the newer seats? The GT2 LWB's have a narrow shoulder area which pushes your shoulders forward a bit, that is my only complaint. I believe this was addressed in the 918 LWB's but haven't tried them yet.

But I have been curious and intrigued by the new 991 RS having read all the rave reviews and watching the demand skyrocket. So.......On thanksging morning a friend of mine brought over his new orange 991 RS for a quick romp through LA's canyons and Mulholland drive. Before the drive we both took a few minutes to admire both of these special machines and took a few photos. The 991 RS is definitely a muscular beast and nicely finished on the inside. About halfway through the drive my friend suggested we switch cars. Prior to this, nobody had driven my 4.0 but I couldn't resist the opportunity. The first thing that struck me about the 991 RS was how absolutely different it felt from my 997 in almost every way. It was very smooth and felt almost luxury GT like. To begin with, the engine had a different character that sounded and felt a little more production like and not as race car like as the Mezger. It felt less engaging and the 997 4.0 seemed to pull harder in each gear. This didn't surprise me as it has virtually the same hp and torque and is almost 200 lbs lighter. The PDK in the 991 is very quick, but I don't know if I will ever fall in love with a two pedal car for pure fun. The steering on the 991 also felt more disengaged and had less tactile feedback. Yes the longer wheelbase was very balanced but felt much less 911 like in a way that felt foreign. I also felt more of the electronic instrusions with regard to suspension and handling in the 991, more digital vs analog. When I switched back to the 4.0 RS it right away felt much more exciting, engaging and pure 911 perfection. While the new 991 RS is a superb performer, my temptation to possibly switch to something newer and improved quickly came to an end that morning, and sealed in my mind that the 997 RS's will become an iconic 911.
I felt the same when I tested the 991 RS at the Porsche Center Le Mans in the begining of october

I'm a lucky owner of a 4.0 and a 996rs! And I have to say I prefer the 4.0! It's old school enough and the extra power and sensational throttle response makes it hard to beat.

Would never trade a 997 GT for a 991 GT. The 991 will never have the heritage of the 997. One has a race proven engine, the other is a production engine that they hope to race with.
