Default oil change - what are you using for oil drain pans?

I changed the oil yesterday. Should have been a 15 minute job, but I spilled about 4 quarts of old oil on the garage floor. I've done a couple of oil changes on the GT3 since I've owned it and I find it difficult to stop the rush of oil from overflowing any oil catch I own or jerry-rig.

I was using one of these...

...on top of a stool I had in the garage. The car was on a scissor lift and I had the oil pan about 8" from the drain. The hole in the drain pan was just too small to accommodate the flood.

I know it's a silly question, but please post up pics of the drain pans you use.

Thanks!

Did you open the air vent on the drain pan?

They make one just like the one you pictured but the whole top is open
I ran in to the same problem when changing oil in my diesel truck.

This works just fine. I use it for oil changes on all of my cars and changed the oil on the GT3 using this particular drain pan just last month. The trick is to open not just the vent cap, but the drain cap as well. The issue is that there isn't enough air that can escape from the vent opening in order to accommodate the gushing oil. That's why it overflows. Once you open the drain cap, there is plenty of room for the air to escape and the oil doesn't spill out. That's the proper procedure.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

+ Yes, the vent cap and drain cap on the pan were both open.

I'm thinking "pickle bucket" moving forward.

Funny that the drain plug is the same size as the hole in the pan. I always find myself digging through hot oil to get it out before the pan starts to overflow. I don't know even bother changing the oil in my truck with this pan, I always seem to get most of the 12qts on my floor than in the pan, but a paint bucket is a great idea.

I have a Fumoto valve on my truck in place of the drain plug. It makes an oil change a lot easier. You can also put a short hose on the end of the Fumoto and run the other end directly into your recycle jug. $25 and well worth the convenience. I wouldn't put one on a low car like my GT3 though.

Default Does it make any difference

if your remove (and leave off) the oil filter when draining the oil ?

I too have experienced a gushing condition when removing the drain plug w/ some spitting and spillage.

Just wondering if air flow from the top down would alleviate the gushing/gulping/spitting of initial oil as it drains.

Thoughts ?
