The LSDs will wear out and act as an open diff after just a few track days. Mine was "ok" when I got the car, after just a few events at beginner speeds it was shot. High speed braking becomes an event as does hard on-power application out of turns.
You have 3 options: have fun with open diff, rebuild the OEM diff with guard, or motorsport internals, or replace with a motorsport, guard, os geiken diff. The guard clubsport diff is very, very nice machined billet and worth the slightly more cost than removing stock diff and replacing internals. Such a shame to hide the guard unit in the tranny!
Even at my intermediate level I noticed a massive difference in the braking and on power performance after having a guard clubsport installed in my car.

I've not seen this synchro issue (do a search here). You will see some balkiness during very hard transitions from 2-3, that is pretty common (generally solved by semi-solid transmission/engine mounts), and if I rush mine, I can get 4-3 balkiness, but that's driver error. I have read of some replacing the synchros with the cup parts which are steel I believe, and are more durable.

+1 on the Guard upgrade. I have "race" ramps in mine and besides suspension and sticky tires, it's the best upgrade. Guard is A+.

clubsport replaces whole diff. need to swap ring gear. need to have a shop that knows how to set lash do the install. rebuild rebuilds the oem diff. likewise shop must know diffs.

club sport diff is more than couple hours to install.
you have to take the gearbox off
you have to reset back lash i believe
not many shops can do that

I don't think COTA is too bad on brakes, lots of cooling in between hard stops at T1, T11 and T12, rest of the track isn't too brake intensive. It's one of the tracks I instruct at.
The only thing that worries me is coolant lines. Not sure who can do that locally in DFW, TX. Don't want to ship the car somewhere and then pay for the motor to be dropped and lines serviced then shipped back.
Is the LSD a performance upgrade or does it blow up if not changed?

yes, this is true. with full diff you need to reset the lash which require a stack of porsche spacers and the tool to measure. my shop prefers to do this w/ tranny out but i have heard can do with in. With a diff rebuild supposedly you do not reset the lash reset (because diff housing is same). Estimates are ballpark.... I figure 1 porsche unit (1k) labor for everything and if less, bonus. :-)

Got the car now trying to prep it for track stuff.
Any advice on aftermarket race seats that fit a 997.1 and what hardware is needed to mount?
Also besides OZ are there any reasonably priced track wheels out there? I've been browsing RL for used sets but nothing has turned up yet.
