Welcome to the world of GT3. Always enjoyed your thoughtful posts on the 964 board. I too am now in GT3 land, albeit in a 996 version. Love the car, love how tactile and analog it feels, and how wild it can be at times.

I am however, considering a 997 version either .1 or .2 and if I'm lucky enough, an RS version of either. So my question is, did you drive them all, and what was it about the .2 that drew you to it? Did you even consider an 04/05, or was it always going to be a 997? Your thoughts will be very much appreciated.

Thanks and Happy Holidays from the west coast to the east

Hey Chris,

Good to hear from you! When I started shopping around I was only looking at 997 GT3s. I drove a 997-1, but I did not like the suspension much. Love the color options of the 997-1 RS but other than that it is not any different except the wide hips and no sunroof although I didn't get to drive one.

I did drive a 997-2 GT3 and I absolutely loved it. So that's what I focused my search on. I would have liked a 997-2 RS but I couldn't (and still can't) justify the price premium. At that time it would've meant selling my 993 to afford one and it just didn't make sense. I drive my cars and put miles on them. An RS is perhaps too much of an exotic for me. A "plain-jane" GT3 fits the bill and doesn't attract as much attention.

Luckily I was able to find a 997-2 for 997-1 money. I like that the 997-2 has noticeably more usable torque in the mid-range and the suspension is much improved. It also received all the 997-2 updates to the interior (and those amazing seats!!!), and they figured out how to delete the sunroof. It just feels to me like an upgraded and more complete car, hell it even has screens in front of the radiators. From the factory!

Happy holidays!

ilko's write up makes me want to go and buy a 7.2GT3...
Not counting wife's Cayenne and my 72S the only non turbo 911 I have ever driven was my '93RSA and that went RIP '94.

Took a few pictures of my GT3 and my 993 the other day. Gotta love the snowless winter in NY, I get to drive the cars through January. Hopefully the trend continues...

Lightning is a bit optimistic, LOL. It's getting its gearbox sorted currently, will be joining those two hooligans soon...
