Default Center Lock corrosion?

Not sure when it happened, but all four Center Locks are corroded... what was once a shiny gray now looks like cr@p. Have a look at the photo. Ideas?

Cleaning products can do that to anodized aluminum if that's what it is.

apparently the way to bring them back to life is to rub them with olive oil once they are completely clean ..

Had the same thing happen to a set of wheels on my 88 944 turbo S. I told the detailer not to put any wheel cleaner on the wheels. He did and the wheels had to be sent out to get refinished.

The oil will make the shell nuts look better but I don't think it will be a permanent cure.

Chemicals will do that to anodized aluminum. Anything acidic left on anodized finishes will destroy the finish. A detailer did the same thing to my black CL's.

Buy new CLs or take these and get them hard anodized. Places in SoCal charge around $150-250 depending on the finish for anodizing a set of CLs. You can always get a different color to add some uniqueness...

It's not that easy to find off the shelf chemicals that destroy anodize. What chemicals a did you use ? Once you remove dye of the anodize it's done. The anodize is still there just dye is gone. Surprise Porsche didn't use type 3 anodize.

I personally think Sonax is some bad stuff. Was that used. I'd love to see the MSDS on that stuff.

I have a second set of excellent condition C/L nuts for sale: https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-ma...gt3-parts.html

$250 plus shipping and PayPal fees.

Also available are the locking mechanisms ($350), set of locating pins ($200), and hubs (only 2k street miles, but bearing races still remain so shipping cost only until bearings removed, then $100/set if usable).

^^ Great seller. I bought the first set of CLs from RedRSA and they arrived fast and look great. $250 is a bargain.

Easy-off oven cleaner will strip it right off :-)

Thanks for the replies. The car has been washed by the same three people in France, UK, and Spain since new... As well as Porsche dealers during service. I'm not aware of any chemicals left on the wheels, and nothing else is damaged whatsoever. I've taken pictures and sent over to Porsche today... Will update when I hear back.

I did 2 things to remedy:

1. use 3 in 1 oil on the surface. It helps but still not ideal;
2. bought 2nd set of nuts from Sonnen for $450.

Cheap insurance and keeps the car looking good.

All good now. Dealer service advisor escalated past a first 'no' and replaced all 4 under courtesy from dealer and Porsche. Happy outcome, only need to figure out what/who caused it so it doesn't happen again.
