Default still want a 996 GT3?

Before I bought my 7 GT3, I was actually looking for a 6 GT3. Since the primary goal was to track the car, I thought a 6 would provide all the fun of driving and modding I needed. But of course, the thinking went, if I paid just X amount more, I'd get a newer car, bigger motor, faster, stronger, etc, etc.

But, how different is a 6 GT3 to drive compared with a 7 GT3? softer, more street friendly, or more raw and classic 911 like? Anyone with both can comment? Is the 7 just a better 6, or are they different enough for owning both to make sense? Should I use the same amount of money to buy a 993 and mod it to my liking instead?

Several of us have had both. I wrote up my thoughts on the differences between the two (do a search for my name). The executive summary........

6GT3-->better on track, worse on street
7GT3-->better on street, worse on track

There is just "something" about the 6 on track. Maybe it's the total lack of any nannies (except ABS) that give you a pure analog driving experience. That was ruined once the 997s came along. I accept the compromise of the 997 since 90% of my driving is to get coffee and I go to the track 3-4 times a year at most. In the past, I was getting 40-50 days a year and the 6GT3 was the better car.

When I bought mine (997) a few years back, I specifically wanted something that was easier on the streets and all the creature comforts and better interior that are non-existant in the 996. If I could get more time to go to the track again, I will definitely pick up another 996.

After going to a 997, I had no desire to get back into a 996. When you add money into the equation, you can argue which is a better buy. Without financial considerations, the 997 is better, as it should be.

Don't even think about a 993. They are cool cars and have a place in Porsche history, but they are dinosaurs in comparison.

The 996GT3 is a good car.
For the money it is a great value that is fun and fast on the track.
With the 964 RSA going for 40k+, a 996GT3 in the 50s is a bargin and wont go down in value.

The 997GT3 is slightly faster on the track and much better on the street. It is my favorite.

It all comes down to how much you want to spend as both will get the job done on the track.
I would say the 997 has more potential on the track given the additional hp, especially with full suspension.
Besides, the 997 traction control is nice to have for warm up laps.

The 993 is not as fast on the track as the newer cars. Wheelbase, hp, age etc.

If doing an old 911 for the track, a 964 is lightweight and has abs. But alas, you just cant beat the GT3 for get in and go!

I thought the 6 was a blast on the track and I do miss mine. Definitely not softer. Absolutely came alive on the track. Hard on your ego when the 7 cars pass you though. If money matters, a stripper 6 on the track would be awesome. 997 is better looking, better interior, and much better on street.

996 GT3 and 997.1 GT3 are very similar on the track with the same driver. The driving experiences are different, but lap times similar. Off the track the 997.1 GT3 is a nicer place to be.

997.2 GT3 is faster on the track with the same driver than 996GT3 or 997.1 GT3. Porsche did a lot of fine tuning to the suspension of the 997.2 GT3. Plus the 997.2 GT3 has more usable torque than the 997.1 or the 996GT3.

Apparently smart money buys a 6GT3 right now. Even 7.1GT3 prices are nuts. There is a white, 10K .1RS for private (not dealer) sale at $120K. Really? 2.5 years ago you could buy a .1RS in the eighties, ask me how I know.

I have a stripper 6GT3 track car that spent a short time with me as a street car. I later obtained 2 x 7GT3RS's that I have used very occasionally as track cars, but are used as road cars mostly. My last purchase was a totaled but fixable 6GT3 that will become a 4.2L RSR replica as time progress's.

The 997 platform is for sure more developed and as a result more re-assuring to drive. To me, the best way to describe is they are more predicable and assuring in their response to your inputs. This is why its a better car on the road.

The 996 platform is more rewarding because the bandwidth that you can experience this in is far narrower in the older platform and therefore not as easy to attain. This is why they make such great track cars where the environment is more predicable and repeatable.

The end result of this is that the 6GT3 is a more rewarding trackcar, because it rewards the effort over and above to a greater degree the the 997 based cars. Both are stupid fast and can be driven so, it's just that the 996 takes more effort to do so.

The other aspect to consider is the dynamic formula each car represents, both in stock and modded form. The 6GT3 was both revolutionary and basic at the same time, having only ABS as it's only driver aid. Even a non-RS 997.2 GT3 has a whole level of driver aids available coupled with a far more developed chassis package including more horsepower. If your developing a track only car, the 997 cars have a high bar from which to start from because the cars are so good. A 996 a lower overall weight and lower horsepower, but with small changes can easily hang with 997.2RS's. Mine does and it still has all its glass and headliner, plus its electric windows.

This is why I bought another one to turn into the ultimate example of the 996 platform.

+1 cars like the 964 and the 6.1 and 6.2 GT3's teach you (one way or the other) to be a better driver, and extract more from the car than you would say in a newer car with improved suspension/handling, engine, nannies etc ...

My dream is still to own a 6.2 RS and park it at the Nordschleife!

I'm very very tempted indeed ... been half heartedly keeping an eye on the LHD 6.2 RS market in europe:
