I have 2 towing vehicles. 3/4 ton Dodge and a 2011 Audi Q7 TDI.
I use the Audi more often than the Dodge. I have pulled my own trailer and my in-laws 24 foot enclosed featherlite. The Audi rolls right up those hills in West Virginia at 70 plus MPH with the GT3, tires, gear, cooler and all... Originally bought the Q7 for wife but the Dodge was getting some work done and I used her truck... Since then I bought her another run around car because I got tired of her complaining I had her SUV all weekend....
Anyways, The Porsche has the same diesel SUV but less space, no 3rd row etc.. Bottom line is it's a pretty kick butt tow vehicle... The Diesel one IMO.
Lots to consider when picking out a trailer. There has already been some really good advice in this thread.
Here were my thoughts when I picked out my enclosed trailer.
20' - just enough for a car, not much else.
24' - enough for a car and a few racer items, spare set of wheels.
28' - car, racer stuff, spare wheels, could crash in if necessary.
If you're already serious about tracking, I wouldn't bother with a 20'. 24s and 28s are much more popular / sought after than the 20s.
If at all possible get a trailer with a escape / exit door that allows you to drive your car in and open the door to get out. This was a must for me, I've towed Corvettes, Porsches, my Spec Miata and a few others, the exit door is super.
Here's a picture of what I ended up with, a 30' Pace Shadow GT tag trailer. I agree that 28' is about the limit for a tag, however this trailer with a 5' RV tongue works pretty well. Both sides of the trailer have 9' long vendor doors that open and lock up, combined with the custom interior ramps I added allow both doors of the car being carried to be opened. Trailer has 28' of clear floor, with finesse I can carry two cars (e..g two miata's or a miata and a Porsche 911 or Cayman).
My current tow vehicle is a 3/4 ton Dodge Diesel. Looking to replace it next year with a 1 ton and seriously considering going dually. Don't skimp on the tow vehicle, when towing the last think you want is for the "tail to wag the dog" so to speak!

you know your stuff. 20' is too small and hard resale. oh, once u try dually, you will not tow any other way. it's like a smart phone. 6-8 years ago, none of us knew we needed a smart phone. today, without a smart phone, you might as well be dead... dually, habit forming.

Looked at stackers, but the truck forum guys say big no no even with 1ton duallys given the height / wind / CG issues
Might be too much for me to pull something like that
Thanks for the info guys
LOL, you follow CA rules? you must tow at 55 and not in the carpool lane then. stackers are much more $$$ and hard resale. and try cross any of our bridges when it's windy. you will have white knuckles and brown spots on your pants.
For me, these days, after 10 years of tracking (not a zillion days but a handful each year) the drive there is just as enjoyable as the time on track. For lap times, I'll go karting.
Otherwise, it's just a social thing at this point. I get to leave the family behind, put the windows down, barefoot, radio off, hit the road in what looks like a rocket ship compared to the other cars on the road and play a nice game of hide and seek with the police.
I could see the trailer thing being for a completely different kind of guy. If I had to drive rt7 up to LRP or rt17 up the glen in a truck with a trailer, I'd shoot myself.
