Picked up a 14Ford 350SD with all the bells this weekend after driving my 3 to/fro Portland to Bay Area. Driving home last week on worn NTs over Mt Shasta was sketchy! Now to sort out the trailer options. Thanks to this board for draining my wallet again!

Well since you got the big bad truck a 38' TPD is your only real option. :-) So much of 'keeping it simple' !!!

Yeah, I told Chris to get the big boy truck so he can get a 2-car trailer. That way, I can pay him to trailer my car to the track and he gets a return on his investment.

Your gooseneck 5th wheel rating is around 24,000 pounds, 18,000 with tag.

Get the gooseneck if you don't use your bed for other things- if you do then it's a tradeoff if you want a canopy. I'm happy with my tag TPD, but if truck never did anything else but tow, it would be a gooseneck no question.

Don't listen to Mooty at your peril. Don't go cheap either. I am another that failed to follow this advice and learned the hard way.

By the largest and best, just like the truck.

I have a gooseneck and can still use most of my bed. I just cannot have a canopy to keep stuff dry. With a turnover ball you can have a flat surface in 5 minutes.

^ If you live where it rains or you haul other stuff that needs protection from prying eyes or have other reasons to keep large things in the bed out of the weather, then you need a canopy. If you have or need a canopy, then it's a pain to convert your bed to gooseneck. This is my situation and my point. Your point that if you can live with a cover over the bed for most of your needs, then yes, a GN hitch like those from Reese flip over in two minutes and folding cover doesn't need to be removed. That's a cool setup but not for me.

I think the most versatile way to do it is to go gooseneck, and if you need a 5th you can add on a 5th wheel hitch (B&W makes the companion hitch, which I use).

Seems the appropriate time to introduce my new truck that I picked up in Idaho:

I know I had my heart set on a new GMC Denali, but that damn canopy forced me back to a Ford (well that, plus all the trunk money on the new 2015's and generous trade in). Keeping the canopy (and yes the sexy bed rug) rather than giving it away with the truck "forced" me to stay Ford.

Actually, the new 2015's are pretty awesome, much quieter (close to the GMC) and an extra 40 HP and 80 ft/lbs of torque made the new F350 a good option. Really nice interior, really quiet and awesome power. Now I just need a Porsche to haul in my TPD again. When is that 2015 GT3 arriving????

Oh, back on topic- this is just another example of how you can never have too much truck or trailer. Buy the biggest, baddest example of both, otherwise you will be like me and go through trucks and trailers until you finally get to the biggest and baddest of both. Then it is enough, but just barely....

Thats no lie.

You think you only need 24 foot bumper pull...... NOT

That is like owning a single car garage and saying, "this is all I need"
