The 991GT3 introduction will coincide with 2010-2011 997GT3 3 year leases ending. Plenty of current 997GT3 and GT3RS owners, some with first generation cars that did not justify a move to the second generation now have cars out of warranty, will be upgrading to the latest and greatest. This is who Porsche is going to market to.
There will be more used GT3s for sale this year.

I was thinking about the value of a near final production 2011 997 GT3 when I bought mine last November (2012). One owner, no roll bar installed, clean computer in terms of NO over-revs and 6k original miles. I'm in Illinois, started looking in October, and this was the only Gen2 to come on the market in the Midwest within 200 miles of Chicago. Was able to get to the track 2x before winter. Haven't driven a 991 yet, but traded in my 997 Gen2 Carrera S for the GT3 ... the 997 Carrera S and GT3 are not comparable. Even with expense of lower control arms, -3 camber and Hoosier r6s on my Carrera S, the GT3 was 5 seconds faster at Gingerman with easy driving and street tires. I hope the new 991s allow for setting up for track without having to change out control arms, etc. Ridiculous that a $100k+ sports car understeers as much as they do off the production line.

10-20% of 997.2 GT3 production entering the used car market in the next year as lease returns, in addition to owners looking to upgrade, makes my point.
I'm sure there are plenty of business owners that take advantage of the tax benefits by leasing their GT3s...

In addition to all the above, let me add that It could very well be that the .2RS is the last and best track car for the money. Time will tell.
I say there are more purist and DE drivers that are aching to move up to a GT3 then there are sub 100K GT3 cars the next couple of years..

and.....
the new model will have to be a HUGE departure from the current 991 that we all see in the showrooms. can andreas pull it off?
he will be heralded as a genius if he does.
but also, i agree with dawg, that there will still be a lot of buyers that don't know the difference. they will still be happy to buy the latest example of mediocrity, showered in chrome tinsel.
everyone can be happy as enthusiasts can stick to the old cars and the joneses can buy the new ones.

forget vipers and 'vettes.
that's like switching vodkas, from grey goose/ketel, back to smirnoff......
does the job for cheaper, but with bigger headaches.
and with no style.
