Maybe not the appropriate forum, but everyone's opinions in this forum are valued. So, I have this friend who is getting a used car for tracking occasionally. I know he is competitive and addictive, and may end up doing it much more as time goes on. He is considering the 3 cars above. Cayman has about 10,000 miles, the 911S 35,000 and the Corvette is essentially new. I told him to pick the one he would rather drive the most in non-track time, since that will likely be the most, and after a thorough PPI, that would be the 911S for me. BUT, I made sure to instill in him the new Corvette ain't what Corvettes used to be, and they are fast and work very well on the track right out of the box. Anything else I should tell him? Thoughts?

'10 vette is cheaper to build into good track car than croc or 's' car but it depends of how much mods owner wants to commit to. if he only wants to track essentially stock car and make no major rebuilds then '09 croc is the best option. if he wants to invest $15k-$20k then '10 vette is not even a question - it will be insanely fast with some body aero, suspension, brakes, oil coolers and engine mods. sounds like a handfull but it is all quite doable and cheaper than comparable job on a porsche car where you got to deal with motorsports parts and prices.
but problem is that after those mods it will hardly be a streetable car. so he has to decide for himself - does he want a street car that can do DE events or a track (race) car that can hardly do street but is still street legal.

I'd pick either the 2009 Cayman...hope it's a Cayman S though....or the new Vette.
Cayman S is well balanced, great DFI engine with no oiling issues and easy to drive on the track. If he ca get a 2009 Cayman S with PDK that would probably be the least of any troubles for a street/track car.
new Vette will be very powerful and cheaper and easier to mod, bigger car too....not sure about standard Vette engines but the brakes will need to be replaced.

Forget the 911, the cayman would be fun, it would have lots of other cars to play with but did the non S come with a 9A1 engine? I would also forget it if it doesn't. The corvette with some mods would be the quickest. The 996 GT3 would probably be a beter choice but not if it will also be driven one salted winter roads.

The base Cayman does not have the DFI engine. It will handle the best of the lot.
However, if he can live with the crappy interior, the 'Vette will provide the best bang for the buck.
In that price range a 996 GT3 would be possible as well.
