the latest Z06 i understand had the oil starvation fixed. if not, convert to dry sump.
the oem brake is not so good for sure, but can be fixed.
rocker and value guide on the latest Z06? i haven't heard much though the earlier one's yes.
all these can happen with cayman and 997 as well

I would buy the 911S. The 911 is iconic. Doesn't have the hp of the vette but is plenty quick and agile. A great stepping stone to the a GT3 if he's bitten buy the "bug" and wants to do more DEs in the future

+1 as someone said: 996 GT3 and skip years of time wasted. For what I spent on a 997 C2S and 09 CS, I could have modded the hell out of my GT3 and been happier a long, long time ago. Short of that, bump up to a .2 CS, add bar, seats, harnesses, wheels and R comps. In that trim, it's a really great car...just not a GT3

PS: Forgot the Z06. Did that too. Did not care for it in stock form and didn't have it long enough to sink the money into to cure its ills.

What's really interesting is that I was in this EXACT boat last spring. I was looking at the 2010 C6 Gransport Vette with all the track day goodies on it. I was looking at a very well sorted Cayman S built by Hergersheimer, And I was looking at 2004-2006 C2S. I ended up with a 2004 GT3.

Also, thanks to everyone who has responded so far. He is not a RLer, but I am going to forward all of this to him and I am sure he will appreciate it.

Oh and full disclosure, I owned a 1999 Corvette track/weekend car previously, along with an E36M3 track car, SpecMiata, and a number of others.

C6 Z06 is already dry sump. Early ones (<2009 IIRC) had a too-small oil tank. Easily and inexpensively fixed with an aftermarket larger tank. Brakes will definitely have to be upgraded (StopTech or Brembo). I have a number of friends who track C6 Z06s (as do I) and none of us have had rocker or valve guide issues, and none are newer than 2009. Probably 130 - 150 track days between us (30 to 40 each). The biggest surprise to me in moving to a C6 Z06 was how much fun the car is to drive, and I have tracked Porsches, Loti, and Ferraris.
