GT3 RS 4.0 vs. GT3/RS

It's only similar in looks. It drives very different to a 3.8 RS, at least to me.
Funny story. I had a vendor come by to install my radar in the Speed Yellow RS. He also did my 4.0. He was taken immediately with the yellow car and even asked where my Grey 6 GT3 was (storage). He did not however remember the white 4.0 that he had worked on. Had to lift the cover to remind him. He came back to the yellow car and wanted to give me his number in case it was for sale. I realized at that moment that the purchase of the yellow RS included an 'insurance policy' in that the yellow one is a decoy for my 4.0 as Joe average has no idea and thinks the 4.0 is a plain white car vs the Yellow RS.

Its not 100k and its my money so will spend how I like. I clean low mileage 2011RS is 135k...buying 4.0RS for 215k.
For 75k the 4.0 its a keeper fella. Last of an era...fwiw its worth the 3.8 is more similar to the 3.6!!!

Have a green '08 RS, a 993, and a red "12 458. Track only the RS.
Agree most with Cobrian, all great cars and all different.
For me, the 4.0 is not ENOUGH different from the other RS's and later GT3's to command the price premium. For that kind of coin, one could pick up a used cup for track and either a GT3 variant or a 991 for the street - makes much more sense to me.
BTW, my green RS gets near as much street attention as the 458. If that bothers you forget the 4.0 as well. Best.

I have a 458 italia and agree the car is amazing...I have put 1200 miles on mine the last two weeks.
I am seriously thinking about trading it for a 4.0RS...here is why!
1) Deep down I love the Porsche brand and the 4.0RS is a special car.
2) The 4.0RS is a drivers car and I love to run the canyons plus occasional track day.
3) Too much attention with a yellow 458...duh
Any Rennlisters want to trade or buy...the car is officially available 2010 yellow/black 458 with 2200 miles. I paid 270k two weeks ago and would want 260k to let her go.

The 4.0RS on the other end, is an unique and special car, the last of an era, the last Metzger engine, with the added tweak of a LeMans GT3 RSR crankshaft, the heart of the engine is straight from the most successful Porsche race car in history.
The price difference between the 4.0RS and 3.8RS is worth every penny. With supposedly 130 4.0RS coming to U.S. out of 600 units, and with 4 times more GT3 RS 3.8 than 4.0 in U.S., it is easy to see that a 4.0RS will be valuable for a long time.
Not long ago, 5 years ago when the first GT3 RS came to America (2007 997.1 GT3 RS), that car carried a premium for a long time, because people were told this was the one and only time we would get the RS. As soon as the truth was revealed, and more RS kept coming, their premium over MSRP vanished, but even today with the crappy economy, the 2007 GT3 RS has a great resale value.
The 4.0RS is a different history altogether, it is for real the last of the Metzger
racing engines, and the last to come with a mandatory manual transmission.
Next generation GT3 and RS will switch to flappy paddle trannies, the next engine has not been tested in racing conditions, so we are back to 1998 in year 2013 with the next generation GT3, and it will take many years to make the 991.1 and 991.2 GT3/RS to prove and show the reliability in track/DE/spirited driving conditions that the current car has shown.
The Italia has an extra 400 lbs over the 4.0RS, but despite of the RS 4.0 being less powerful, it still laps the Ring 11 secs faster than the Italia. For street driving, the 4.0RS with its massive suspension travel is a better car than the Italia when "Fun" is a factor.

Uncle Mooty
I slept five hours last(one more than my norm) and have decided on a 4.0 to purchase. As much as I love Jochen's orange 4.0 it will cause the same issues as my yellow 458 did(thanks car commander).
I like the diehard love to the Porsche brand on this site. I will be buying a new white 4.0 today.
