991 GT3 is going to kill

I think the 991.1 gt3 will be a 3.8 for the standard car and 4.0 for the RS.
Maybe the 991.2 gt3 will start at 4.0 and then the "final" RS (a la 997.2RS) will come with a 4.1/2/3
Remember, Porsche is going to figure out what they can deliver, then spread it out incrementally over 3-4 model cars.
My question is this: the Cup Cars. The 2005-2007 cars were good. The 08/09's were better, some say much better, and then the 10'11's were even better. But they can't compete with a 458 GT3, an SLS, Lambo, Corvette, etc. You need a GT3R for that, and even then you are probably going to be behind. Maybe an RSR, but then you are going into silly money. I still don't understand the real differences between the GT3 Cup, GT3R, GT3RSR (in terms of cost, technology, power, laptime, and why?) but whatever.
Anyway I have a point here. The race cars need to get quicker. Much quicker. No doubt Porsche has an idea how to pull that off. They just need to manage the transition from a marketing standpoint to the GT3 road car so that it still has the same pedigree. So the question we ought to be asking is not what the next gt3 road car is going to be, its what the 991 based Cup car is going to be. (and of course whether the two cars will continue to share parts, etc).

No way 500 HP from 4.0 likely cost or durability issues. Porsche has a history of doing less with more. While it would be nice to be competitive with 458, you are talking apples to oranges in terms of engine, transmission, suspension and price-point. Manual transmission GT3 will have a tough time matching PDK 991 S cars due to "human factor". On paper it will be faster but unless you're a pro ? 2013 Shelby GT500 @ 650 HP has a manual with driver preset RPM range max for 1st gear launches that will maximize times for 0-60, 1/4 mile etc. Set it and hit gas/drop clutch. Something like this would help the "average" driver achieve repeatable times that most can't achieve on their own...

Agree. GT Grids are as competitve as ever - with a decreasing number of Porsche teams. Will the performance starting point be the Cup car - with the street GT3 slotting in below. The Cup car needs a major performace upgrade to regain it's leadership. The 991 GT3 would also benefit from those performance gains.

^ I don't think you're going to see big price drops with any of the current crop of used gt3s. I believe the 6 has hit close to bottom and the 991 is not going to be cheap. A well optioned 991 gt3 even without PDK is going to be >$125k with the right options, imo.
I'm not delirious thinking that 7 3s won't fall. With that said I think you're going to see some a foundation forming in the low $90s for a .2, etc.. post release of the 991. I don't see a lot of movement from there for bit with exception to miles, etc..

The new large size of the 991 is here to stay for 14 years (if history is any guide). I don't think they'll be able to lose enough weight from such a large structure to make more power unnecessary (particularly in racing).

I REALLY hope the 991 GT3 uses this Hybrid electric/hydraulic setup from the Cup, instead of the fully electric system from the 991 Carrera.

Grant,
What with all the sophisticated modification shops especially in Europe of 911's- some even capable of creating internal roll cages without the actual visible cage, CAN any of these shops convert a 991 to hydraulic steering- I bet it would be a hit especially if it brought the steering feel back. J

The horsepower rages on, but there's definitely a focus on getting there more efficiently.
