Default SF Bay Area-need ride in 7.1GT3

For the past few years, I've been struggling with the idea of selling my 6GT3, and getting into a kinder/gentler car. In fact, sold the car last April, but reneged after further consideration. Long story short, I'm back in that mode again considering a 2007 GT3.

Anyone in the SF Bay Area have a 7.1GT3 in which I can get a ride? Be nice if I could drive it, too, but not necessary. 10-15 minute ride would be enough.

Hey Joe ... well there is a big diff between the 6.2 and the 7.1 ... but between the 7.1 and .2 with a sharkwerks byoass is similar ...

the .2 is an incrementally better car.... also I think you are going to nitice a big difference between the 6 and the 7 in terms of the handling etc...

I'm going the 7.1 route mainly due to self-imposed budget restrictions. I note you earlier went the route i'm considering, that is, 6.2 to 7.1, and from your comments, a good way to go.

I'm looking for a ride in a stock car, so I can hear the difference between my 6GT3 with the Cargraphic mufflers and what I hope will be a quieter ca.

stock 7.1 is a lot louder than stock 6.2 ... but it may be quieter than the cargraphic...

Hmm, I'm with Larry on the above re: noise.

Also:

-I feel the 996-2 GT3 rides better than the 997-1 GT3 (at the very least, it's less jiggly, though the 997-1 GT3 does tend to fix the 996-2 GT3's tendency to follow grooves, etc. — and it seems that some subjectively prefer PASM ride qualities).
-The 996-2 GT3 has a noticeably lighter shifter and clutch than 997-1 GT3.
-Engine-wise and character wise, the 996-2 GT3 feels like a better/simplified/sharpened 996 Turbo/996 Carrera where the 997 GT3 feels a lot more like something else, a bit unhinged, a bit just this side of a race car.

There are many reasons to move from 996 GT3 to 997 GT3, including interior quality, torque curve, exterior styling, better (more supportive) seats, newer technology, etc. — but "kinder/gentler" isn't one that comes to mind. Were I in your shoes, I'd strongly consider swapping the stock exhaust back in and then trying a 996 Carrera 4S. Your 996-2 GT3 rides better than that car, too.

Just my two cents...take it for what it's worth!

Best,

pete

Pete (and Larry),

Coming from you (two) maybe I'd best seriously consider staying with my 6GT3. I'm sure your comments come from considerable experience with the cars.

I'd go to the 997S w/PDK, but just didn't enjoy the experience of a non-manual sports car.

Thanks

my recollection of the "essential" difference between the 6.2 and 7.1 is that the 6.2 was a scalpel that required a skilled surgeon to extract the best (w/o cutting themselves in the process), the 7.1 is a far more tractable car to drive at speed (with the exception of the understeer on initial turn in) as Pete says its also a bit less "nervous" (scalpel) and PASM (normal) seems a bit softer than the 6, PASm sport is frankly useless IMHO ...

have you thought about a GTS???

My budget, my budget!! Really trying to stay within $25K of what I might be able to sell my GT3 for.

I did think about a GTS, but outside that limit.

I'm away from my laptop right now. Is FF's car posted here? Haven't looked for one so probably looked right by it.

As with LC, I suspect GTS is the right car for you. Why not switch the exhaust on your car, bide your time, and wait for depreciation to bring the GTS within reach?

If you're antsy, I'm a really big fan of 997-1 Carrera six-speed manuals with NO options and 18s — though they're not easy to find and you have to check your ego at the door because a lot of Porsche people won't "get" your car. It's just a really sweet, simple car and really fun to drive on the street. I even started to not mind the bad ride height and 18s after awhile, so good was the driving, and that's sayin' somethin'. Be careful, though: It's easy to miss the brilliance of the base 997-1 stripper on a short test drive. I told Patrick Long how much I liked it and he looked at me like I was nuts. Then he tried the same press car a few months later and called me to rave about it. Ditto for a friend who had a 997-1 GT3 and sold it because it wasn't "sweet" enough ("too much on the street" I think he said). These days, he drives a Boxster Spyder, and says it's the best car he's ever owned, and might be the best car he'll ever own (and he's owned a lot of good ones, including various German and Italian greats). That guy drove the base 997-1 Carrera and said, "I don't get it...steering is light, shifter is light, suspension is soft..." 300 miles later, he was utterly in love with it.

Anyway, different horses for different courses...but if you're looking for "kinder/gentler" Porsche that's still sporting, I'd look at these according to budget:

997-2 Carrera GTS
987-2 Boxster Spyder
997-1 Carrera (with 18s and no PASM)
996-2 Carrera 4S (though you may not like the ride)

Happy hunting!

Best,

pete
