2004 996 GT3, bought new, sold at 38,000 miles:
- 2 RMS leaks
- 3 diffs
- 3 clutches.
- First RMS at 32,000 miles and I thought the car was immune to RMS leaks. - 2nd RMS leak at 34,000 miles.
- First coolant loss and almost a major accident, 22,000 miles.
- Bended front drop links under 5,000 miles.
- Badly cracked front rotors in 2 track days and less than 120 minutes.
- New transmission under warranty from Porsche.
- Cracked front LCA bushing, driver's side.
- Replaced leaking oil line under warranty.
- Non working reverse light fixed under warranty.
- license plate light not working, fixed under warranty
- replaced rear subframe due to worn out alignment holes
Other that this a very reliable car, no ABS ice mode despite of multiple sizes of tires/wheels used in 4 years. My co-driver experienced ice mode once, and I don't recall this to be an issue. I miss how fun this car was.
My 997.1 GT3 RS: bought used, sold with 24,000 miles
- 5 RMS leaks.
- ABS ice mode quite often on bumpy tracks and flat autocrosses, despite of trying different pads, brake fluid, tire sizes.
- engine rebuilt under warranty
- LSD worn out, no biggie
Other than this a very reliable car. More reliable than the 996 GT3. I miss the look of this car, best looking ever Porsche 911.

08 non-RS 7K miles - nada

Wrong diagnosis made by the Porsche dealer the first time the car went in. I guess they saw so many mk1's with leaking RMS that they didn't spend a lot of time looking where it came from.

This is great news.
NO RMS leaks on the 3.8 engines
The coolant fitting stuff is an easy fix (a must in my opinion), the LSD fix an easy one as well. The ABS ice mode is unfortunate, but most cars have this problem. I wish Porsche could put a race ABS in the GT3/GT2.

Transmission cooler valve go bad on the earlier .2 GT3's.
Also had o2 sensor go bad.
Replaced diff, run water wetter in case coolant hose blows.
15-20 days on OEM rotors is good IMHO.
Ti center muffler burns out in about 10 track days, but you want a sharky anyways.
13K miles only so far since April '10.

RS3.8:
Lift system not responding after parking (car doesn't want to go down), fixed but reappeared after 2 weeks; Rear light cluster steaming up, replaced under guarantee, but new one does it again (did they really replace it???!).
That's all....

Wow NJ-GT, How do you drive these cars?!?!?
My car has 42k on it. I put 14k on it in a year. I have had to replace the transmission carrier and engine mounts (these are wear items). No fluid leaks of any kind.
Other than that, pads, rotors, engine/gear oil, brake fluid, etc. In other words, all maintenance items.

Wow, I wonder what this would look like for 997.1's. Mine's been pretty reliable with the exception of:
1. Rear deck lid wouldn't open (straight off the lot, was fixed a year later because I didn't even have to add oil during that first year, and the engine is ugly, there's no point showing it to people)
2. 1st and 2nd gearset replaced under warranty with <10k km (6,250 mi) due to 1st gear synchro problem (I was initially blamed for the problem, but it was common enough that my local dealer now concedes was likely a defective part)
3. Coolant fitting blew out (you've seen the post and video, pretty scary, no need to repeat)
4. Recently blew an amplifier in the sound plus system (approx. 32k km)
5. TPMS battery died, but that's my fault because I had CCW's on for over a year so the TPMS on the stock wheels must have given up.
The clutch is on its way out, but other than that, it doesn't need anything right now. This is with 30+ track days and 33k km. I was out driving yesterday night and was marvelling at how much I love this car. The only thing that freaks me out is the coolant fitting issue; I always have that in the back of my mind, thinking through what I'd do if I lost control on my own coolant at 120km/h on a major highway...
I should note that this car is a lot easier to keep "perfect" than my previous Porsches. The 944 Turbo S was almost impossible to keep perfect because there was always something that needed to be worked on or fixed; a 964 Turbo never really runs perfect because of the MFI and the 993 Turbo, as gorgeous as it was, would always have a small leak or the smell of oil or the threat of the exhaust valves needing replacement in the near future, at huge expense. The GT3 on the other hand doesn't leak, runs like a top, and all the electronics behave. I'm surprised at the issues others are having, I thought these were more reliable than that.
