Default Where is the REVOLUTIONARY 998/991?

What happened to the revolutionary 911 that was due to come out in 2011/2012?
there was going to be a big overhaul and we have all been waiting for this great car that was going to be the leading car of the sports car world. I just read the
Road and Track 991 overview and its just an other evolution with small baby steps forward or in some cases sideways. There is no 3.8 anymore the suspension is the same and the look over all is sharpened but its still a 911. I thought we were all waiting for this HUGE overhaul of the 911 in the 991 or 998. Am I just off my rocker or had Porsche just lulled us to sleep?

Looking back the revolution happened in the 997.1 to the 997.2 with the PDK and the new 3.8 9A1 motor.
Are we looking at something thats already happened?

Evolution .. not revolution.

Since 1964.

The console is awful.

I didn't detect any sarcasm in the thread title.

The new one is faster: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...ere-we-go.html

Porsche is a pretty smart company. Last time they went for revolution everyone was pissed (993->996). I'm going to guess and say that they'll never make that mistake again.

The 991 is as big a revolution as we're ever going to see from a cosmetic point of view as well as creature comforts perspective.

PDK has been around for decades. DFI was a step forward but I wouldn't consider it a revolution. The Porsche 911, no matter what the internal codename is, will always look like a 911, for better or worse.

The 991, iirc is longer, wider, lower, bigger yet faster and lighter. That in and of itself is revolutionary. The interior has been brought up to $100k+ standards, design notwithstanding and the exterior has been updated to 21st century design standards and whether we (minority of Porsche owners) like it or not, the 991 will appeal to a broader demographic which translates into more sales.

I'm always amused at all the negative commentary a new model receives around here and only a few years later see some of those same authors of that negative press become the flag bearers leading the parade of how Porsche got it right and how great Porsche is making minor changes that add up to an exponentially better car.

The 997 will soon, if not already, be a thing of the past and future 911's will undoubtedly be better and faster. Enjoy what you have but there's no need to put down the new family member in a ego driven attempt at self preservation.

That said long live the 997.1 RS the last of the non-E-nanny cars (remember no PSM and TC can be truly turned off).

Great post, MJS. Yes, I never really understood grown adults using the word "hate" to describe inanimate, material things.

If the 991 is ugly, how is the 997 beautiful? lol

The king is dead, long live the king.

Not sure where you forumulated this expectation, I personally do not recall Porsche (as usual) making any "up front" claims about the nature of the 991 revision.

The 911 evolution has always (in my mind at least) been evolutionary rather than revolutionary (perhaps with the exception of the 993-996 step, but even then modulo the motivation of cost reduction influences on the chassis/body it was evolutionary even the air/water transition).

I am not sure what would be revolutionary - an 8 cyl? mid engined, 4 seats, 2 seats, hybrid ... what were you expecting here?

seems like an evolutionary car to me, but I am not digging it so far...

The 991 is a major improvement, it is a totally new chassis, and a great promising car. The have a Hybrid in sight with an even lighter body, and it will make the next GT3 an amazing car.

Is an inflection point design change revolutionary? I think so (and not in a good way):

1 - the largest WB increase in the 911 evolution

2 - a larger GT like interior

3 - a creased 'pretty' more datable exterior

4 - a rubber-band-like assisted steering

5 - electric e-brake

6 - a silly sunroof

7 - auto start/stop albeit defeatable

The 991 is a fantastic GT/sports car with superior performance. It will be sought by many, and those who always want the latest/greatest, and care less for core 911 design traits.

But the 991 is a more distant cousin - by a large margin - of the original 911. Some of us are not after a faster car, a more stable car, a larger car, a car ready for hybrid components and such. For those who are after all that... the 991 is for them. For those who already think the 997 is big and prefer a nimbler platform with a classic pendulum effect, there are many great 911/930/964/993/997 to choose from.

So there you have it... quite revolutionary.

As i always said, the 997 will be the new age 993
