it better fits in the VW group range and is a feeder car to the new lambos and the economy Bugatti.

there was going to be a big overhaul and we have all been waiting for this great car that was going to be the leading car of the sports car world. I just read the
Road and Track 991 overview and its just an other evolution with small baby steps forward or in some cases sideways. There is no 3.8 anymore the suspension is the same and the look over all is sharpened but its still a 911. I thought we were all waiting for this HUGE overhaul of the 911 in the 991 or 998. Am I just off my rocker or had Porsche just lulled us to sleep?

Looking back the revolution happened in the 997.1 to the 997.2 with the PDK and the new 3.8 9A1 motor.
Are we looking at something thats already happened?
There is 3.8 in the S version. I also read R&T and they quote is wrong, the S still comes with an 3.8L engine.

OG, at least your post was somewhat on topic for a change

wsh
Wsh I have been here for a decade. Sometimes I get tired of:
whats better the 996TT or the 996 GT3,
whats better the 997TT or the 997 GT3
whats better the 997 GT3 or the RS
whats better the 997.2 GT3 or the 997.1 RS.

Plus I have had a HELL of a TWO year period, 2 back surgeries
almost lost my 16 YO son. Not much in the Porsche world going
on for me. But these guys here are STILL some of my BEST friends EVER,
So I communicate with them. here.

SO I post Off topic once in AWHILE
I am ALSO A MEMBER.

I ALSO PUT OT in front of my OFF TOPIC posts. FOR you that dont know the O stands for OFF and T for
TOPIC

I do that so people like you that ARENT members DONT HAVE TO CLIK on the POST. Its called Modern communication. That will enable you to QUICKLY AVOID my posts and go to those that might interest YOU.

IR guy
I wondered about that and I thought that would be a GREAT mistake by Porsche to take away this 3.8.
I love this motor!

Larry Cable we have been talking about this for 5 years or so, that there was some REVOLUTIONARY
car coming. But still I think the revolution in Porsche standards was the 997.2 with the 9A1 and the PDK.
A BIG change for Porsche.
People were even saying, I am waiting for that big change 998 or 991 or what ever the car was going to be.
Yes there was talk about a V8, there was talk about the PDK (before it showed up) there was talk about the
move to a mid engine. THere were all kinds of BIG moves talked about. I think the biggest one was the demise
of the 6 and going to the 4.8 V8 some form of detuned CGT motor.

That's my point; it was all talk within the forum, it was a self created illusion; Porsche have nothing to apologise for ... any dissapointment is of our own creation.

correct the base is a 3.4 and the S is the 3.8L ...

The Porsche micro-site for the 991 is already up, all the details are there...

Larry Now that I think about it, most of that stuff got round filed after the credit crash in 2008 and the acquisition of the company by VW
SOme of the stuff we talked about all the way back to the 996 version was leaked by Porsche insiders to us here.

Could you elaborate on the 997 being the new age 993? thats a good think you guys are thinking?

Ok, I guess then we should take such "leaks" with a healthy dose of scepticism in the future then?

Well, you could easily argue that the 993 was the pinnacle of air cooled 911-dom, what with the twin turbo, 993RS & CS, Evo and Evo2 on track and it also in some way fathered, or mothered, the Le Mans winning GT-1 cars in 97 and 98, that then begat the Mezger GT derived block engines in the 996 and 997 TT & GT cars....

I think many would agree that the initial 996 cars, built as they were in hard times, and sharing a lot with the early boxsters were not exactly a 911 that everyone (anyone?) loved ...

I personally think that it was not until the original GT3 and TT cars emerged in the late 90's that the 996 'came of age' ...

looking at the 997 range, with the GTS, GT3, GT3 RS & 4.0 not too mention the GT2RS ... these might be the pinnacle of this "chapter" of the 911 story ... I personally feel the same way about the 991 as I did about the 996 when it 1st emerged ... it took the '99 GT3 CS to change my mind about it ... and at that time the GT3 was a real evolutionary step that set it apart from just about any other car (in)comparible to it then ...

p.s
I note from the micro-site the 7sp manual and PDK the 7th gear is an overdrive, so everyone thinking that 7 is better than 6 are in for a dissapointment when comparing to the 6sp 997s ... JMHO

Larry we usually do that, but this conversation went on for years and got pretty serious. ALL smoke now!

As far as your 997 breakdown goes I believe you 100%. I am still inlove with this C2S PDK for two years now. way longer than I usually
go with one car.
FUnny, I feel the same thing about my 2006 BMW X5 4.8iS. I want a Cayenne bad but this BMW is such a great truck. I keep it.

I am beyond happy with my new 12 GTS. I had expected to be a bit disappointed after trading in my 10 GT3 but no regrets. I was looking at the 991 but didn't want to wait and I'm glad I didn't. The GTS reminds me a bit of the last of the 993's when they went to the 2wd wide body, and I always thought the 997 was evocative of the 993.

That said I like the looks of the new 991 and believe there wil be one in my future. A 991.2 though. By all accounts it is seriously fast, faster than a 997 GT3 at the Ring, at least. Thats quite an accomplishment. My only concern is that it will lose that distinctive 911 feel with the electric assist steering. A Nissan GTR is fast but I don't want one, fast or not. I think the verdict is still out on the 991. I hope we will be pleasantly surprised.

As fast, and PDK apparently... lets wait till Autosport lap it!

JMHO I think we talked it up ourselves ... YMMV

clearly the 991 is *better* than that 997 ... and some of that is objective (weight, accel, fuel usage etc etc) and then there is the rest which is totally subjective ... it will win or lose based on the latter I think; which is why we
regularly have these GT-R, Corvette, LFA vs 911 debates again ... and again
and again ... its a lot easier to win a mind than it is a heart!

Friends - I was in Frankfurt over the weekend, attended a presentation of the car to the German clients.
IMHO, the car can be billed as revolutionary:
- new generation of engines which are already prepared for motorsport duty - apparently no 8 cylinder future in a 991
- increased track esp. in front and wheelbase, different weight distribution
- lighter chassis that should stand the test of 991.1, 991.2, 992.1 and 992.2 iterations
Plus, in real life it really does look rather good, especially broad shouldered at the front - all IMHO of course.
I have a 4.0 coming in a few weeks, but indulged in configuring a new S with PDK, sport PASM, PDCC, Sport Chrono Plus and as light as possible - no frills really. The Exclusive gentleman told me I should watch out as it might be faster than the 4.0. That's pretty good going for, as Rad said above, a second-to-basic version.
Best, wurlie

the 991 carrera S with the chrome accent trim around the side windows looks very classy.
It is going to be a great GT and give a lot of two door luxury coupes serious competition.

the Aston Martin is great looking long GT, now the 991 in the newer longer wider body looks the part for those buyers who never considered a Porsche as an alternative to the Aston Martin.
