I don't know why but on my 2 year old Canon Vixia with image stabilization, it shakes even at parking lot speeds (even with a good mount). There is something about those cameras that doesn't love a car. I know I'm not the only one so if you go that route, make sure you can return it. Also, I had the original Go Pro and it died after a year or so. Got to say though, those suction cups are amazing. I had it stuck to the left front fender at the Glen (tethered albeit needlessly) and the thing stayed on, no problem. Video was not very good and audio even worse.

Those seem to be the better option because of the image stabilization and zoom function.

I've found the Contour to be much easier to use in a motorsports environment (simple on off switch that can easily be operated with a glove on). The GoPro, can't tell you how many pictures of myself I find on the memory card or just random video, or none at all. In a sidebyside comparison I've found the Contour to have better video quality for those looking to use the footage in HD quality videos.

Contour is fazing out their 1300 unit which is the standard unit right now, in favor of making their GPS unit the new standard. Personally I don't find the GPS much of a benefit for racing due to it's slow refresh rate so .

We've got quite a few of these units on closeout right now for $139.99 an absolute steal.

I/O Port has a video (you must download it, sorry!) that has 3 cameras mounted on a roll bar for a side-by-side-by-side comparison. It's from 2009, so it's a bit out of date, but.. I can tell you that my GoPro Hero HD is not much better than the GoPro Wide that they test here.

BTW: I use the I/O Port camera mount on my roll bar. No shake! GoPro sells an adapter for a standard tripod mount and I've got that to screw it down to the I/O Port mount.

I have a new JVC Everio HD and SD card camcorder that I mount to my rollbar with an I/O Port mount. It has dual stabilization and I get absolutely 0 shake. The only issue I have is I have to write only to the SD when on track. The HD does not like the high g's while recording. Stabilization is so good that you can't even tell on the playback when I go over bumps.

Only, issue I see with that camera is the FOV. It's only 95 degrees when shooting at 60 fps. It's too narrow of a field. It'll be like watching a video game and not know where the car is heading or where the upcoming turns are going to be. The images from the gopro was excellent 170 degree FOV, but there's the fisheye effect on that camera.

I had a lot of trouble with my GoPro at first. I found the 2 button process to turn on and then to start recording to be very painful and usually meant no video. I upgraded the firmware (on the GoPro site) and now it starts recording as soon as the power button is depressed. Have managed it with gloves on as well. A real improvement. I also purchased the skeleton case that allows a cell phone charger (cigar lighter to camera) to be plugged in whilst driving for recharge.
I do find the wind noise to be intrusive.

The goPro has its limitations, but spot metering vs center metering fixes the issue with dark cabin & bright outside. It does have a universal mount piece from which to secure it like any other camera. The Viewfinder piece $70 bucks comes with a few piggy back cases so that is not an issue. Battery life issue can be solved by buying a skeleton case back which allows you to supply power from a cig lighter via usb cable. Its a cinch. All of
was shot with a GoPro. Similarly, the gopro can be mounted outside underneath the car etc.
was experimenting with some different camera angles.

Oregon Scientific ATC9K, found at the Novato (only) Costco for $200 a couple of months ago. Waterproof to 20 meters, which should make it good for snorkeling when in Hawaii, too. Was great in NC at the National Whitewater Center, and running the American River a couple of weeks ago.

Video from last Friday, got two so there's a front and rear view (the first two, synch them up). Third is, uh, well........you kind of have to wait for the punchline. GT3 is Ed from here, who'd I'd only met that day. I'm sure HE remembers this yawner. Fourth is in the water.

Funny, I'm going through this decision process as well. Lots of good info here. Enough in fact, that there doesn't seem to be one clear winner.

So, for a good camera + accessories, it'll be $500. Where do you draw the line between getting one of these and going to a data system like the Vbox lite @ $1,500 ish, or others that include a couple of cameras? (I guess one can get a camera and later add a separate Traqmate...)

PS a bit of entertainment (jump to 1:00 if no time to watch the whole thing)

So, which is the proper setting to get a decent in-car scene when it's bright outside ?
