it's too bad the gopro cannot zoom. When mounted on the rear roll bar it seems too far away from the action. too much unwanted scenery

Correct. I am very hopeful though. I've got a track event on aug 19th. I can report back then

The limiting factor on the GoPro is the battery. 2.5 hours on one charge.

I use a 32GB SD card and record on 1080p. But you can get about 4.5 hours on the card.

If you have a way to charge it between runs...then you can go a while. They have a battery backpack to extend the time...or you can tie it into car power. I have not done either.

I see a $29 option for ROLLBAR mount.

GoPro
Storage
* Memory: SD card (SDHC), up to 32GB capacity (not included)
* Average recording times (using 32GB SD card):
o 1080p (30 fps): 4h 21m

32GB SD Memory Card US$ 79.99

Now I see why this GoPro is so inexpensive... $29 rollbar mount, $79 for memory card...

+1, I like the zoom with wide angle lens of my Traqmate recommended Sony HD camera. I've never run out of memory card space and I think it is a 32GB SD card: http://store.traqmate.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=190

Just look at the Traqmate store, they tell you, they don't sell them. I bought mine over a year ago, so I'm sure there is a better model now.

OK, so then you are not tied to Sony. If you don't mind a few hundred extre dollars, I still go for the regular recorders, but the GoPro is the value here.

Traqmate sucks, but if you get someone to help you set it up and merge data with video it might work most of the time. I know some used ones for sale. The less I bitch about it the better it seems to work, so you might want to give it a try, IF you have a local to help you out.

regular recorder, i.e., sony or canon?

Those seem to be the better option because of the image stabilization and zoom function.
