Should I buy a 08 GT2 or 7.2 GT3RS?

I have been watching the 7.1GT3RS versus the 7.2GT3 or like comparisons threads.
However, as a near future GTXRS buyer I have comparing the 2008 GT2 to the 7.2GT3RS, and how close they are in asking price.
What would be the consensus on these two cars assuming even price point and what you get for your money? 2008 GT2 versus 7.2 GT3RS and why?
Thanks

As you know many threads reduce this to the NA versus turbo choice a la "drive the one you like".
However, since you asked without providing much info on intended use, I make the following assumptions:
1. you are not a track junkie looking to thrash an NA RS 6 days a month.
2. you are looking for a car to "drive on weekends".
3. you are familiar with turbos (per your avatar and signature).
Buy a GT2.
Far fewer of them.
Lower rpm torque (massive).
A well set up/ driven GT2 is faster (dry surface).
It has, subjectively, more of a "presence" due to relative rarity.
They have equivalent motorsports parts of the 3RS and more (transmission).
$20-40K upgrades (and no changes to internals) gets you to stupid fast (GT2RS & more).
The in-cabin sound of the VTG's is an industrial grade symphony...without having to get to 6.5K RPM.

If you drive the car on the street, get the GT2, the torque is massive, and a lot more fun to drive.
If is a track car, go for the GT3 RS, really fast, easier to drive than the GT2.
I asked myself the same question 15 times .... It's all about what do you like.
the 2008 GT2 is the ultimate cheater car. Can make 600WHP with simple bolt-ons and turbo upgrade.
HOLD ON !!!

If you are going to keep your 993TT, get the 997.2 GT3 RS. If you are going to sell it, get the GT2.

The usage plan would be to 75/25 split between street and track. I want a car I can drive to work and but take to a track to enjoy with my kids.
I got the OK from my saint of a wife, but now I have too many choices. Seems like each next level is "only" another $10-15k, but then it gets somewhat out of control.
I would love a lease option scenario for 1 year. Have a chance to really get to know a car, what I like, not like, and what I would have to have for my situation without committing $100k plus with little to no experience with these cars.
The GT2 seems like the best scenario for my situation above. Not sure about resell, but getting to the age where I don't want to care anymore. I like the ease of bolt on HP you mention.
Great point! thanks

You are thinking about the GT2RS.
A regular GT2 is much closer to the Turbo, with more hp and rwd. It does not have most of the motorsport goodies on the .2RS for track use.
@Tony,
If you plan to use it mainly on the street, then I will recommend against the .2RS.

Aside from VTG how is it much closer to the 997TT than the 3RS? It's a Mezger-driven GT series car with a "real" dry sump correct?
I'm not suggesting you're wrong. Am genuinely interested.

IMO, I want a GT3 RS too but own a heavily modified GT2.. I feel as if, coming from a monster 996 GT2 I would need an equal or more so 997 GT2, which can get very costly at that point in order to enjoy it, or else IMO it feels too docile/soft...
GT3 RS out of the box has more soul though, both can be driven on the street, GT2 once you learn how to drive it is SO MUCH MORE REWARDING than a GT3, no cheater car needs to be inserted after my statement.. HP makes you go fast? Not if you can't utilize and pilot it, and once you can? The car is sososos damn fast around the track it's ridiculous....
Both are rewarding, both have it's ups and downs... Pro's and Con's...
Tough decision, i've been there! Good luck

After extensive time in all 997 GT variants save the RS 4.0, I prefer 997-1 GT2 for street work to the rest, including GT2 RS. 997-1 GT2 is just plain wonderful, though few will find out. Feels nearly as fast the GT2 RS (check the torque split...it ain't much), but way more refined and deals with back roads better. One of the ultimate Porsche road cars for people who like a little edge (way more than 997 Turbo) but not too much (like 997-2 GT3 RS).
In 996-2 days, I preferred GT3 to GT2. In 997-1 days, I went the other way—not so much because I liked the turbocharged GT2 engine (though I did) but because the 997-1 GT2 suspension was better sorted than the 997-1 GT3 RS's. MUCH better. Not sure which way I'd go if it was my money with the 997-2s (and it was cost no object). Probably GT3 RS.
In your case, 997-1 GT2 all day long. Rarity factor, something I don't really care about, is a nice bonus in this case since the $$$ delta is now closer.

For track I have driven both gt3 rs.2 and gt2 rs.2
For a pro driver gt2 rs is faster and more rewarding
For a weekend de guy the turbo torque is dangerous on track, it comes on quick and you better be pointed straight.
The gt3 rs is easier to handle.....if torque gets you in trouble on a specific corner just short shift
Also the gt2 rs required too much shifting, I like high revs
For the street just but a turbo s, plenty fast enough......

2008 GT2 definitely much closer to a 2008 Turbo (still GT1 engine) than a 2010 .2GT3RS. Not trying to say which one is better, but GT2 is mainly derived from the turbo and not the GT3/RS line.
