As I make a final decision for a roll bar (DAS vs GMG chromoly), the safety questions keep coming. I fractured a rib indoor carting as I slid into the left wall after a right turn (with cold tires--duh), and it reminded me of just how fast we drive at DE events and other track days. I am looking at restraint systems, and have been told if you are going with a HANS device, you need to buy the restraint system accordingly. So, the decision is now. I am kind of a safety guy anyway, always riding full gear summer or winter on my motorcycles, so am leaning towards the HANS. Feedback? Also, Schroth vs. Porsche restraint system? Any opinion appreciated.

YES to hans
i prefer schroth hans specific harness.
yes, i know porsche harness is by schroth, but it's not the same. get the hans version.

when mounting, chk where your shoulder blade is relative to the harness hole on the seat and the angle of the harness to the cross bar of roll bar. my torso, for example, is much longer than legs, so very few seats work and i need custom roll bar just so i can place the harness at optimal angle.

the angle of harness installation is on HANS site.

so you saying the horizontal bar in your car is higher up so that you get that rightangle with your shoulders?

it's not right angle.
goto hans site. it's got pix and diagram.
how long is my torso?
most seats, my shoulder is ABOVE the harness hole in the heat back. the harness must flow unimpeded through the hole, in addition to other requirement per hans.

There was a long thread ( I think in Race and DE entitled Head and Neck Safety) where there a big discussion about ISSAC and Hans Devices......an excellent read with some very very good questions being asked. Well worth it.

I agree ! Yes to Hans. I noticed something last week on a friends device. He put "mole Skin" a fuzzy faced tape on his Han s and it keeps the belts in place much easier. Going to do that to mine next week. Note the Hans may seem uncomfortable at first but you quickly adapt and last week I was helping a friend and he did not have harnesses so no Hans and I felt like I was missing something.

To me it is remarkable that with the very reasonably priced technology like the HANS that is readily available today that anyone would go out on the track without the significantly increased protection that it offers. This is particularly true in the context of someone who is tracking a car like a GT3! I would no more drive without one than I would without having my harness fastened. Get the newer-style one with the sliding tether and by the time you finish your warm-up lap you won't even know you're wearing it. I actually find it more comfortable as the shoulder straps rest on the device rather than your body.

I can't imagine setting a car up with seats and harness and not getting some sort of hnr device. There is a lot of debate about which hnr device is the "best" (that seems to be common when discussing anything car related on the internet), but there is no argument that a device is better than no device. Hans will slow you down a bit in the paddock (even with sliding tethers), but maybe that's not a bad thing.
