Exclamation Help Please - Alignment Problem ?

I just got back from the Porsche workshop. Car went in for alignment and after a couple of hours my service advisor called requesting me to come down to the workshop, he told me they weren't able to get the front camber to specs.

The specs we're :
Front Left Camber: Before -0.25" / Now -1.10"
Front Right Camber: Before -2.56" / Now -2.25"

Front Left Caster: Before 7.32" / Now 7.40"
Front Right Caster: Before 8.51" / Now 9.00"

Toe 0.00 both left and right

We tried adjusting the front camber to specs but on the left we we're only able to get -1.10" nothing else, on the right we we're only able to get -2.25" nothing else.
The rears are ok and aligned to specs.

Anyone experienced this ? Any clue to whats happing ?

**Note I did not rotate plates, nor do anything to the suspension to gain more camber etc..

u can shim and/or rotate shock top to get whatever camber u want.
though i dont know why the max camber on left is so different than right side. i presume you already chked that both sides are not shimmed or shimmed equally.

- every time i see a post like this i laugh, how is it that a dealer can be so clueless about their own cars?

- the search function is your friend

- if a dealer didn't know what to do, strut rotation is likely way beyond also

- they should be able to add shims (it is very basic)

- have your tech goto his parts department and place an order for you for "shims" - the parts numbers can be found on here if you search (basically they come in 1mm, 2mm, 3mm and 7mm (i think)) thicknesses
- as a very very crude approximation, 1mm = .1 degress so order 2 of each of the above (1 set for each side) and keep the spares if any in the glove box for when needed

- if nothing has changed, the shims are 996 part numbers

Unless the car was involved in an accident and was repaired badly or at the dealer they don't have a clue about what they say or don't know what to check and how to measure,
the difference between the two sides is very big.

Something is wrong. Maybe you should try another shop?

In any case do a search here for rotating struts and adding shims although I beleive that in the 2010 cars you can reach adequate camber numbers without the rotation.

John

PS. Here are the availiable shims.

Thanks for the replies
I was involved in an accident about 5 months ago and got my car a month ago, Tracked the car last Friday and noticed bad tireware on the front right so I went to check the alignment.

Whats confusing me it that I never used shims or rotated the struts, how is it possible to gain that much camber on one side with a stock suspension set-up ?

The car is going to the main workshop tomorrow and ill have a chat with the chief mechanic who is from the UK and has a good mechanical understanding about our GT cars.

Keep you posted

You need to first off have your tub checked on a frame alignment machine. Determine if the tub is (still) bent. Until you do that you are wasting time and effort to do anything else.

From the sound of it, after that is checked and fixed you need to find a shop that specializes in Porsche and has a clue as to what they are doing.

Tarett lower control arm shims are WAY cheaper than OE shims which are ridiculously priced.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out?

I had the same experiance in my GT2 , in the same dealer , one side had very low caster , when Manthey had a look at it this summer the side with lower caster and camber problems had the upper strut bent , the dealer checked the car numerous times and was clueless ......now my car is perfect after i installed there suspension.

After the accident the first step after dismantling was frame alignment and all was good nothing was bent from the accident. Since most of the suspension components we're damaged during the accident so it might be a problem with the repair of the front suspension components.

Regarding a shop that specializes in Porsche, Their is non here sadly, the only one would be the Porsche workshop and they have no clue/knowledge to what they are doing. The closest Porsche specialist is in the UAE which I will be visiting as soon as I get my Tarett suspension components.

I will keep you guys posted.

QTR,
the shop doing the alignment is clueless, there is no way the front portion of the tub is that bent after is has been fixed, your likely cause is having one upper hat rotated and one not, probably the side that got replaced. Hope this helps.

Turned out my car is fine. Its the alignment mechanic, so clueless to what he's doing and doesn't know what to check and how to measure.

This is too sad !!!
