My understanding is that the 9A1 was already engineered to easily adapt the Flat-6 to Flat-4 and Flat-8 versions from its inception.

amazing that a small company (relative to Porsche) like RUF can undertake such advanced engine development ...

whats outstanding about this engine is the fact that its lighter than the mezger engine... wonder what the ctr of gravity is like compared ...

Rumormill: Porsche sending off 997 with 500-hp 911 GT3 RS

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Sep 20th 2010 at 12:32PM
Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Just when you thought that the Porsche 911 GT3 RS couldn't get any more enticing, word crops up that German sports car manufacturer has a new special edition planned. If the buzz cropping up over at Teamspeed is to be believed, Stuttgart is working up a special edition RS to end all RS models. The car will be limited to just 500 units, each one packing a heady 500 horsepower from a 4.0-liter mill. That represents a 50 horse jump over what's available in the standard GT3 RS and 65 more ponies than the "base" GT3.

The news comes courtesy of Teamspeed member AlexG, who despite the urging of his fellow forum members, won't share his source. Even so, the GT3 RS Limited Edition is supposed to make use of the same flat-six engine found in the mighty RSR. Pricing is supposed to fall well below the 911 GT2 RS but above the standard 911 GT3 RS. We're guessing that the sticker will fall somewhere close to $200,000 if/when it goes on sale in July 2011.

if it comes with working diff, non breaky tapped coolant lines, and no RMS drip I'm in! otherwise, i'm keeping mine. i think 991 will be electric hybrid….

What if it is a GT3 R hybrid version for the street? That would be around 500hp and in sync with Porsche's new "efficient dynamics" theme.

That's what I'm thinking based on this:

Kinda hope this is the case as if not, it certainly won't do good things to .2 RS values. Have one on the transport and was a late decider since I wanted the last 997 GT3 iteration..

You could argue the opposite for values ... for those of us who think "pure" and not some battery operated (albeit a race derived) Tonka Toy!

point is there are some of us (maybe just me) that while impressed with the hybrid technology, would consider it a step down from the "purist"/"classic" current 3.8L generation cars ...

That's what I mean, if it is a new 997.2 RS version, I hope it is based on the hybrid tech vs. a stroked 4.0l GT1(a larger capacity version of the 3.8L 3RS). I too would consider it a step down from the current, purist 3.8l car which has more value in my mind.

I think it has to do with Porsche showcasing their new technologies as on the 918 spyder. The GT3 R is probably easier to make than the 918 spyder. I also wish they make a non hybrid version of the 918 spyder but things are going to get more complicated.

Read somewhere that 4L was the max. displacement doable for flat 6, not sure if talk was about Mezger engine or 9A1 engine. But, considering all the talk about the just introduced 911GTS and this thread on a possible 4L GT3rs, then perhaps a new flat-8 is a possibility (albeit remote) for the upcoming 991. Increased wheelbase of 4 inches is the biggest change ever, would surely accommodate a flat-8. Purist would say it woudn't be a 911 anymore, but hey, the M3 is now a V8, and started as an inline 4. The dynamics of a flat-8 991 with the increased wheelbase would mimic more the dynamics of the current generation with the flat-6, as compared to the future 991 with a flat-6 and the increased wheelbase. Economically for Porsche, it wouldn't make sense since the 9A1 engine is only 2 years old. But maybe for the future. It probably would make sense in the racing arena, having a flat-8, plus all that history. I'd go for it if I was Piech!

500hp 4.0L stroker RS with more top and bottom end grunt, solid suspension, and some lighter CF/Alu bits...maybe even better color choices to boot?!? Who knows if it's true but it'd be an insane track toy and I'd be all over it.

As for residual values, just reinforces the view that you should drive em into the ground.

My guess is that the "next one", whenever that is, will be Hybrid, 500 bhp (or thereabouts) and will offer PDK.
