Here is a hypothesis for this car's existence (if it's true):

Maybe Porsche has decided to discontinue the Mezger motor for the 991 GT2 & GT3 and this is the final run for this legendary motor? Just a thought - I'm still not convinced that a 500hp GT3 is forthcoming nor that the Mezger won't continue in the next generation...

Couldn't they use the crank that's used with the 4.0L racing version of the GT3? I'm not even sure that the racing 4.0L has a longer stroke - can someone confirm please?

500 hp from a 6- now that's engineering. Actually if it comes out with a 4.0 liter but only 485 hp- that still rock
my world. Gt1 motor is just a thing of beauty and design. Mike

i think the 4.0 rsr is a stroker as it can't be bored out anymore past that?
the crankshaft is very much race-spec and not entirely streetable i have heard.
i hope they bring it anyhow. more to look at, and think about.

That sounds as though there may be some truth in this rumour.....

If in fact they do this then they (I believe) effectively throw away the option for a 991 chassis'ed GT3 & RS with the mezger engine/block in 2012/13/14 ...

It would make sense to then have a mezger "swansong" somewhere in the 480-500 range, but if I were a new RS owner I would be a little frustrated that Porsche did this in this generation car and not the next as everyone 'expects'...

Then one has to speculate what the 991 based GT3 would look like, they then either have to beat the current 3.8L cars, abandon the GT badge entirely, or re-brand the 'GT' badge ...

They could of course take the the 3.8L RS setup and put it in a 991 GT3 giving it 450bhp ... but then what do they do with the RS??? - I dont see how they can get more than 500 bhp from a normally aspirated 6 ... but then I am not Porsche, but at some point the growth has to stop ... perhaps we are approaching that point now ...

Interesting point, Larry. While I'm wildly speculating, how about this possibility:

The 991 GT3 will have a Flat-8 based on the modular architecture of the 9A1 DFI motor?

I guess they could go this route I suppose ... although thats a major investment in engine design, not too mention that Porsche has always led the GT engines with a race version in the Cup/RSR cars and nothing has appeared there "yet"

Ultimately I think there comes a point where the power "race" has to end ... we are pretty close to that point now ... the 4.0L (3.9) RSR seemed to be that endpoint ...

perhaps there is a future in the RS Spyders 3.4L?

That is what we need in the next GT3 RS - the RS spider engine still mounted in the back but moved towards the front a little. Isn't Ruf doing something like this already?
