Yup, pretty cool
Also love the clear camera angle with no mirror blocking the view.

pretty awesome-- both Larry's driving and the track!
very nice of ya to let him flog your RS around that place.

1. can't imagine taking the time to remember all the turns-- i'm assuming Larry's had some considerable seat time there (i hope so- otw, very impressive)
2. that high curbing looks scary
3. fast blind turns with possible accidents around the corners and no flaggers -- it ain't no pca de, for sure

Default O'er wee LarrrrrrY

Scottish Radio Reporting: “Flying Scot on the Ring”
(say this in yer' best Scottish accent!)

….Well, what an absolutely grrreat day for a wee run rund the Nurburgring. Oer man, wee Larrry Cable, frae “Rennlist”, California, via some tiny wee village in bonny auld Scotland, is oot on the circuit and has plenty tae prove. He’s gone an’ swiped the keys tae some poor laddie’s GT3 rrRS an’ is certainly gee’in it all he’s got. Wi’ grace an’ precision he masterfully guides this fare smashing wee car through the twisties in Hocheichen. The sound of the 3.8L motor is superb and na lacking onney horses ither. What a fricken’ rocket dun Flugplatz! All o’ a sudden some eijet (idiot!), virtually comes tae a stop in the muddle o’ the track in a bloody girlie man cabiolet tae gawk at some unfortunate bloke who gone aff in-tae the Armco. The eijit then taks aff like a bat oot o’ hell, but o'er wee Larry is quickly on his backside in nae time at all. Larry shouts some unmentionable curse at the top of his massive lungs as draws up a langside, and tears aff o’er the hill leaving the puddler tae dribble alang in his flimsy chassis’d poser-mobile. Larry’s nae funished yet, as catches mony a tosser up an’ shaws’m “who’s the laddie”. What at display o’brilliance an’ smath inputs thro' the challengin' Nordschleife, Jackie Stewart wad be fookin’ proud!

Well done Larry, yoor' grrrreat!

Cheers!
wee Doogie N.

This school is great and even though a BMW event, it was comprised of about 20 GT3's it seemed. (GT3 and RS - 997.1, and 997.2)
There were 3 White and one Grey 997.2 RS. Jean Claude who posts on here occasionally has a yellow 997.1 GT3 with steel brakes and he can really fly. I think on his graded lap he did a 7:42 bridge to gantry.

This school is held every august and the only way to learn the ring unless you speak german. For the first 2 days the course is split up into 11 sections and you repeat them 15+ times with instructors leading a small group of 10 cars (14) participants. Before each section begins we drive out slowly and then hop out to walk the more technical corner in that section and talk about the ideal school line with detailed maps. During lapping, the coaches can hop in and help with the line. Whenever i followed our lead coach in his C2S I thought I was doing great until i hopped in his car or with jean claude and they proceeded to double my speed through the same section!

Before the school i was lost on all but maybe 10% of the track. Now I am good for about 70% which is huge. My lap time while very very slow has been dropped by a full minute and at least I know where i'm at. I have a great video of myself driving with Larry giving clear instructions talking through an entire 2 laps and I'll post that for anyone wanting to check it out. It also helps to memorize the section names and be able to identify them because its the only way you can communicate with anyone who knows what they are doing on the track.

The last day you have a full graded lap in the morning with open lapping in the afternoon (not public lapping, just for our school). The graded lap was fun bc they have the instructors hidden in all the major corners and they score you for precision and appropriate speed. I don't remember ever feeling so nervous! They work out the timing so you feel you are pretty much alone on the entire track. It was really fun though.

I also got to try a GTR! We had two GTR owners in our group who shipped their cars from the US to come out and play. This very nice gentleman asked me if I wanted to try it as we both had the same driving coach from the states who also attended with him. To say the least, its a really fun car to drive. I'm not a fan of AWD, but you wouldn't see me complaining if I had to drive one around the Nurburgring. They both held up to constant beating on the nordschleife for 3 days so other than going through pads rather quickly they seemed very hearty and up for the task.

Finally on the RS, wow - it is an UNFOOKINGLY UNBELEEEIVABLE CAAAR!
I couldn't imagine a better car to learn with and live with. You can point it pretty much anywhere and it just goes as long as you are confident with the accelerator peddle. Thanks again to Larry for his instruction. I have another manic lap of his in the RS and I'll post it later.

-Jim

Default 8:16 BtoG ...

Not my fastest, by about :16 ... but quite quick Jean Claude is quite a bit faster than me in his yellow .1 ...

I was happy to be 10th in the school overall and fastest N.A driver ... congrats to JC as he took 2nd!!!

more to come on my thoughts on the RS ... (apart from the obvious which is everyone should have one)

anyone want to trade a low mileage mexico blue GT3 for an RS?

I've been going to the ring about once a year since around 2003 so I have a few hundred laps under my belt ...

This was my 1st year as instructor/coach so that was fun ...

funny you should mention the accident possibilities ... checkout the M coupe on the inside of briedscheid bridge!!!

not fun!

I can see you were being mightily restrained and respectful of machinery and owner.

As for swapping an RS for a GT3, I can be persuaded. I see you would put it to good purpose.

Great stuff Larry. Beers on me next you return from the driver's Valhalla.

BTW I want to publically thank Jim for being so kind as to let me drive his new RS around the Ring, when we got into the car I think I said something about "I wont get on it ..." but once I got on the track the amazing performance and handling of the new RS was such that it begged to be driven "at speed"

I certainly kept it below what I would have driven my own car at, but I really appreciate Jim letting me exercise the beast ... I had a tremendous time driving the car, and I think Jim had a similar time in the passenger seat ...

I dont know how to thank him ... but thanks are most definitely in order...

BTW Jim forgot too mention that he himself won a trophy in his group up against some stiff competition including a couple of Nissan GT-Rs from the US!

well done Jim, many many thanks again, see you at the ring soon I hope!

some photos from the trip:

Larry and I got there about the same time. Even though I just completed a 4 hour drive and he got off a plane we both wanted to just go drive some laps right away so off we went. I think there are more GT3's per capita in this tiny town than anywhere else in the world including the factory in stuttgart.

red was popular. 2 here and another 2 on the other side of the car park. interesting wheels on the foreground one.

line up for first day. JC and I were first there in our group.

here I am sitting on the karussel. Its so great that we get to stop and take it all in. Feel the surface. The concrete in the karussel is really really rough and feels to be about 40 degree angle. very steep. it was fun almost falling out of car getting out of the bucket seats while parked on it. TC failure light also came on when I started the car. It didn't like being parked like that. quick reboot and its fine again.

helpful hints all around the track. such as centering your car over this white dot for entry into the karussel.

RS parked

Lineup Next Day. I thought it would rain for sure, but it only rained a very short bit. Actually mostly while we were at lunch.

great view from vehrseifen that you normally don't notice while moving through here.

instructor walkthrough of kleines karussel (mini karussel) corner part of the schwalbenswanz section towards the end of the track before front straight.

this is a section map drawn on the section its covering. Thought it was pretty cool for the chalk talk for schwalbenschwanz.

JC the weltmeister in his gt3.

This was another coach in our group. He grew up on the ring. Started driving there at 8! He got the use of a friends CSL-L-L. He is fast even in a peugot, but in the CSL he rocks.
