Nice example of Mk1 for those that prefer it over Mk2:

From My point of view I don't like the center lock rims because it will be difficult and expensive to have a second and third set for tracking. Not many options but the OE rim and that is just not practical for me since I mostly track this car. Plus for me way to much money to trade in and trade up now. I am happy with what I have.

If the option was Mk1 vs Mk2 with no cost implications then you would always take the Mk2 as it 'better' but the difference is not enough to trade from one to the other. Do I order the RS?!

Its only a matter of time until this problem is resolved. There are already a number of wheel companies generating designs for the new GT3s.

Personally, I like the Gen 2 front end better than the Gen 1 and the the Gen 1 back end better than the Gen 2. Both for the same reason. I like the ones that are less busy.
I don't really care about the center lock wheels because of the issues with aftermarket track wheels. Beyond this, there is simply no comparison and my choice goes directly to the Gen 2. Overall it is better looking with more downforce and improved cooling. It has an improved suspension, brakes and engine. Because you can get sport buckets seats now and there is no sunroof, the Gen 2 is actually lighter than the Gen 1 RS (sport buckets reduce weight 55 lbs).
I can understand the point if you already own a Gen 1 that it would be hard to justify the dollars to upgrade to a Gen2. But if you were one of those who could not get on the list to order a Gen 1 and have the opportunity to order a Gen 2 then the decision is easy. I am one of those. In May 2007 when I decided I really wanted a GT3, I talked to 22 dealers and none could get me on the list to order one. This time my allocation came in. If it was still the old specs of the Gen 1, I would still be ordering. But, getting a car that is improved in every way just tops it off.

The .2GT3 is probably a better car than the mk1; but my RS is a better car than I am a driver; so for now I'm keeping it and spending the money saved by not trading up on tuition and trackdays.
When opening the garage door no longer makes me smile and give thanks; or by some miracle I outgrow the abilities of the RS then I'll consider trading up. Suspect that won't be for some time yet!

+1. The incremental changes are just on paper. If you own a 997.1 AND track the car then you would be better off spending the $40k delta on track time, suspension sorting and lotsa Instruction.

I've read all of the articles and love the power improvements and very small parts of the new style aesthetics; but I just cannot say, "I gotta have it!"
what am I missing?
the 997.1 "clicked" for me at first sight and still does....it had been a long while since any car had done that for me...

I own a MK1 and it is a superb car and I absolutely love it, but I also agree with a lot of posts here that it really is such a individual thing and would it be worth trading up when the MK1 is such a great motor?
For me....... yes absolutely! But this'll be my last Porsche and it'll have to be a keeper...... at the moment..... I think
