Default Cordless Impact Wrench?

I'm buying a cordeless impact wrench.

Will be using it to change out tires on my GT3.

How many volts of power do I really need and/or would appreciate recomendations on a wrench.

Thanks

Mike

I have this setup. Works fantasmatically.

Can't remember what the lug bolt size on GT3's, but the torque stick works great on my M3.

I too have the IR 2530 cordless... works best when the battery is "fully charged" for optimal reverse torque. Otherwise it did not work too well loosening a lug nut originally torqued to 75 ft-lbs. but this is after the lug nut has been on the car for a while.

Best, of course, is still air impact. Majority has 600 lbs rev. torque...

I've used several of these and if money is no object the Snap-on one is amazing.

However I tried to find a reasonably priced yet effective one and went through several models that would not break loose lugs at <80 ft/lbs.

On a whim I tried the 19.2v Harbor Freight model (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=96448) which I got on sale for like $69 when I purchased it and was amazed at how effective it is. Easily breaks loose lugs torqued to 90ft lbs. I've used it for 2 years now and it never fails to miss a beat. Best tool money I've spent in a long time.

Interesting, never had issues with my IR, but I'm running a stud kit so I'm removing nuts rather than bolts. Probably less friction in breaking them loose.

I'm going with a Makita/Li battery/18 volt. The Li batteries stay charged on the shelf a ton longer than Nicads.

my $ goes to snap on.
had it 4 years, used on bolts and nuts.
on average i take wheels on and off at least 1x a week. i replaced the rechargeable battery once. other than that it's fine.

i abuse it a lot. i throw it from one and of car to another, evertime i change sides. it still works great, depite the road rashes.

Hmmm, always wondered how you hit the right torque setting with the impact wrench. The manual on my recently purchased Milwaukee suggests a bit of trial and error (and practice) to get the right setting . Doesn't sound too precise. I think I would still rely on a torque wrench but open to hearing your technique.

Never trust a impact wrench on torque - even one that is at or under the torque spec for the bolt/nut you are wrenching. Always use a properly set torque wrench...

I rarely use an impact wrench (air or battery powered) to tighten lug nuts or other fittings. I use them primarily to bust fittings loose and for removal. Hand tighten and torque to spec with the proper torque wrench. If a fastener is located in an awkward spot I might use an air powered tool to get at it and snug it down but always hand tighten and torque to spec.

Tried several over the years and the best by far is Snap On. If you look at a lot of the Pro Teams check out their guns! Breaks the nuts with ease.
Also for peace of mind I ALWAYS use a torque wrench, otherwise you maybe compromising the stud/bolt.
My two cents.

impace wrench is not for torque'g.
you use it to take off the bolts/nuts.
and you use it to quickly get the blot/nut on, i stop the gun as soon as the nut /bolt seats against the wheel. THEN torque it with torque wrench.
