Smart money!
It seems to me that the GT2 is not going to hold the premium, and go for a discount. There are 3 reasons for this 1) softening economy and 2) Dealers screwed their natural market, loyal customers and 3) many people offering their car before delivery (panic already?).
With the advent of Direct Injection and sequential transmission, the next GT2 is bound to be a superior car; and it is not that far away so the smart money will demand a significant discount or wait.
The softening economy will humble some dealers, and they will be begging for customers just to get Panamera allocations.
Keep your powder dry!

Colm, I hope youre right I was hoping it wouldnt be long till the dealers faced the wrath of the customers they screwed in this last round. I cant believe its coming so fast

I'm afraid as long as people are selling cars on ebay for premiums over msrp many dealers will try to capture that profit for themselves. Is there a way for Porsche to limit all the flipping that's going on (put a condition in the warranty or something?).
By the way, with the recent seeming confirmation of a facelifted GT3 and possibly RS as well, I'm shocked that some people are still asking 40k+ over sticker for their RS.

Colm,
I subscribe to your theory on the new GT2. Having been one of those burned by the market on the last GT2 even though production was very low over it's four year run, I passed when offered my dealer's first car at MSRP. I'm sure the GT2 is fantastic, but i'm not making that mistake again.
I think the premiums will hold for a short time -- same as was the case on the early '02 GT2's. -- but then the market will collapse. I bought my new '03 for a discount (not nearly enough as it turned out) and there had only been 68 '02 GT2's sold in the prior model year. I remember when one of the first GT2's sold in Cali went to a relatively well known actor for $100K over MSRP...crazy.
I'm already set to be #1 for the next GT3 with DI and sequential....looking forward to it.

OG, I saw those too (a white one at Rusnak was one of them, I think--and one of them didn't even have PCCBs?!). The crazy thing (to me) is that there are also a lot of them that are reasonably priced as well (at or very near original MSRP). And you can get a low-mile RS for almost 150!

It just dawned on me Colm that this is like a group buy. Probably half the 100 US GT2 buyers or on Rennlist or 6 speed. You guy could sort of Unionize the Buyers club and send a shock through the dealers network.
I doubt there are like 5 buyers deep on the GT3 were, so if you guys start "Pausing" your orders the price might DROP!

I never saw the need to commit to this car at prices over MSRP. Mooty points out that two sold for $50K premiums ((imo)relatively small, considering the limited production). I will be interested to see what the "resale" market brings.
Like Jack, I have already experienced the "pleasures" of GT2 ownership. The RS wasn't available on the first go around; and its current presence changes the landscape for the the new GT2... along with the fact that changes to the turbo charger may make it harder and risker to modify (not my thing).
Further, as Mooty again pointed out, the current marketplace has become much more competitive (and the Porsche Dealers less so). The combination of events (and adding in the economic climate) suggests premiums on the GT2 might not be easily recoverable.
One more thought that hasn't been raised (much?) PCNA has not definitely said there will not be an 09 GT2. There are some heavy hitter Customers who couldn't get cars at MSRP. Of course, they could be the lucky ones!

Pehaps the current economic situation will conspire against the GT2 but if Colm turns out to be right it will be kind of ironic given the early glowing reports of the 7GT2's capabilities. Looks like Porsche did a great job this go around outa the box - see thread above - "Monza GT2 rollout"

Colm,
I agree with you. Anytime something new comes out that appeals to the rich folk (I don't include myself in this group, btw), there is a short-lived mania until they move on to the next new thing. And there seems to be a crazy amount of wealth that seems to chase things like a new CGT, F430, GT2 or R8. Paying MSRP for a GT2-- even w/o a premium -- borders on lunacy, since in the end it is a depreciating asset. But, we're all crazy that way. Paying over MSRP...just add the premium to the amount of wealth that's lost. Always better to wait until the mania is over, regardless of the type of asset. Just my $0.02.
