Default Would you buy a Cayman if it had the GT3 running gear?

I am a fan of mid-engine cars, and have a question for this forum.

If Porsche produced a Cayman with engine and gearbox derived from the GT3, would you have bought that instead of the 911 GT3?

Let's say they cost the same and have the same horsepower to weight ratio.

If so, why?

If not, why?

Yes I would. Mid engine layout has advantages.

Depends on the price. I looked hard at the cayman for wifey but ended up buying her a Z4M coupe.
becuase of the HP difference and the $20k diff in price (BTW I am SHOCKED at the snootiness of my
fellow Porsche guys that have caymans and their views toward BMW's!!)
however with the GT3 running gear there would be some huge advantages and the equation would
change dramatically obviously.

The 998 GT3 with the current V8 engine layout from the RS Spyder may be just that you asked! A mid-engine GT...

As well balanced and fast as a Cayman GT3 may be, I wouldn't buy one if it was the same price as a 911GT3...depreciation would make for extremely high cost of ownership. If I was fine with taking a $40k hit in the first year or two of ownership, I'd get a GT2. And personally I don't think the Cayman is very attractive. It would be a great used buy, however...

It is this idea that keeps Porsche from doing a Cayman "GT3"!!
They are obviously correct in thinking that most customers see the 911 as the top platform no matter what.
If Porsche marketed it correctly it would hold its value just as well as a 911 GT3 - if not better, because it would smoke a 911 GT3 on the track!

Basic answer: yes.

I should probably pay a premium for the mid-engined Cayman GT3 vs the 911 GT3, but I wouldn't. That's because the Cayman GT3 doesn't have the heritage (or good looks IMHO) of the 911 GT3. Also, I would expect a discount because I tire of many P-car folks looking down on the 986/987/C. Porsche would have to clearly position it above the 911 (non-GT*), possibly with a new model designation, for it to work for me.

Other alternatives are used F-cars, but I don't know if I could morally/financially come to beat on one as a daily driver as I can on my Porsche. I am not into GT luxury cars, and I like the GT3/RS formula.

I don't like the "invisible engine" aspect of the Cayman/Boxster. If I'm going to pay 50K just for the engine, I'd like to be able to see it and check the oil all by myself...

As my sign on suggest, A BIG YES YES YES. a gt3 varient of the cayman would be a bear of a car. All the benifits of a gt3 and the great platforn the cayman offers.

That said my cayman is having its full cage put in and the new legal gt3 drop links and control arms, So i am 1 step closer to nirvana
