what was the weight shaved by removing the sunroof? did you replace with a steel oem panel or cf piece? awesome car! the suspension looks amazing.

Hi John,

in all respect to your efforts, may I ask why you haven't bought a 997 cupcar right away considering the extent and direction of your mods.
Thanx for displaying your thoughts on this.

I have actual weights (from digital scales) rather than user's manual b/s for several 997 GT3 and 997 GT3 RS.

The weight difference between similarly equipped GT3 and GT3 RS is consistent at +/- 60 lbs. The LWFW saves 18 lbs, the rear RS wheels are 0.5 lbs heavier, the RS saves the rear speakers (1 lbs total).

So you should be looking at a 40 lbs weight reduction from the sunroof compared to sport roof.

What a thread. I just read it from beginning to end. Thanks to VB997 and Grussell for sharing their information so freely. THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU.

On a side note. Grussell: I saw your car at the shop 2 weeks ago as it was going under the knife. I'm sure it'll look fantastic in the end but the transformation is definitely not for the faint of heart ( like me )
Can't wait to see it finished!!

VB... awesome car. Would love to play sometime. A few thoughts...

Based on the pics, I think you are way too low on the spring rates. I had a ton of roll as I moved up from 700/900 to 1100/1300 and now I run 1650/1800 and it is awesome. I finally took the cup rates and adjusted for the added weight in my car and came up with something like 1640/1810 so hence what I got and I love it. So much better to drive and suprisingly, not much rougher on the bumps.

As for hitting the front springs, check out the sizes of the cup springs, much shorter height than stock. I ordered shorter ones for my car and no more rubbing :-)

And as for crack, I mean Hoosiers, I am only getting 3-4 days from mine (rear) now and they are losing grip after the second day. I am actually contemplating shaving a set new to 3/32nds to start to see if I can get the heat cycles to match the tread life.

Thank fully, no cage mess for me this year, that was last years project.

I'm still playing with my spring rates; I might go slightly higher but not 1700 lbs. I've played with very heavy spring rates in the past (on my 996 cup car and 997 GS car) and found that I lost time on the clock dealing with constant correction. Additionally, I couldn't use the gators if necessary because it would really upset the car. I also found my tires wearing faster and unevenly as a result...It's probably just my driving style and Personal preference.

I'm running Michelin slicks in the 997 cup sizes and getting great grip for 12 heat cycles...and then it's "fun".

I have 1200 lb springs on the car now, which seems to work well for my lack of natural talent...check out the second lap of this video from last weekend as I go over the gator in turn 4...admittedly, a driver issue and not a car issue but my point is 1600 or 1700 lb springs would not have liked that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY8VH9lJtTk

Thank you for the great compliment.

The guy in the orange car is a good friend (Matt Einstein-GT3 Nut) and he's a really good driver. He would have be hurting my feelings if he was in his cup car! My goal is to grow into my car and make him earn it in his cup car...but it might take a while!

my philosophy too. i like the softest spring rates that allows me to drive consistently without having to wait forever b/n transitions.

and MATT (GT3 nut), you need a 997 cup cars. you got to push john back!

I'm actually quite surprised that the RS could pull that strong on the straights, compared to a 997 GT3 with 400-500 lbs reduced.

Both drivers were great around VIR.

I'm still working on the weight reduction thing. I'm only a coupple of hundred pounds lighter when you add back in a full roll cage...but stay tuned
