Red face Almost F#%ked up today!

I have been driving Porsches for almost 46 years and have never experienced what I did today! I had to make a quick run to Ft Bragg from Gualala to pay for a building permit, about an hour drive along Hwy-1. I have made this drive many times in the past. By many times I would say well over a hundred!!! At least 5 times in the 3 since Dec. There is a set of switchbacks by Brush Creek which have always been a challange in the 3 as they almost to slow for second gear and a little fast for first going south as they are both up hill. Going North second seems to work well as I am going downhill and I can sort of throw the car around as you can see around each turn. In the 997s second gear works well both ways. In the old 930 it was great as you could smoke the tires going south, up hill, and feel like you were driving a dirt track. ( I kind of miss that 460HP beast) It was my second favorite set of turns in the 930.

Today on the way back home I hit the first uphill a little hot in second and the frick'n car would not turn!! I had it full lock, I mean this thing was pushing like a big dog! I had to totally get off the gas to get it to turn. Another second and I would have been kissing the guardrail. The second turn I actually got it a little sideways. Has anyone tried mounting some 245's on the front yet? Do they even make a 245 in the MPSC's? I really don't like understeer.

Then again maybe my driving skills are just starting to erode.

Were you getting on the throttle at turn in? This happened to me once in a very flat 2nd gear turn, same problem, same solution, it's easy, just lift and it will hook up. I've never had an issue since. It's not my experiience that this type of thing happens at the track, only when you are running below max, and see a turn you want to speed up for on the street. My understanding is you should be trail braking at turn in, or at least neutral. Plants the front. This is my first Porsche so I've been careful on the streets, spun twice at the track, but no understeer problems at all.

Brings back memories.

You know, it was a pretty gnarly experience to be sitting in the cruiser cuffed, watching them tow away your perfectly fine working order M3....

Oh, to be young and stupid.

that was in 2004 in a SY 996gt3, nothing happened to the car, but they believe my license was suspended. it wasn't. i had to go to their station and have my lawyer talk to them and dmv and some court judge to clear it out. took a LOOOOOOOOONG time.

you can never win against the gov't even when you are right and they are wrong.

i was not cuffed... i was only a tad over the speed limit.

I have always been very aware while driving, have an escort 9500 in the 3 and 8500's in every other car, I am a life time 1199 and it doesn't hurt that we have very few CHP here locally. However just two wekends ago I got pulled over by a young CHP on the Rohnert Park expressway for going 35 in a 35!! For not having a front plate! I had to do some fast talking and name dropping to get out of that one and he warned me that I could have my 1199 taken away for getting stopped to often. WTF!!! I mentioned that I knew one of his fellow CHP officers and his parting remarks were "I don't care if you are a member of the 1199 or who you know the next time I see you without a front plate Im going to give you a ticket." I had just come from Reno and had averaged 77mph for the 220 miles, so I guess I am blessed. Also, I don't think it hurts that I am 61 years old. Also I have strict rules I adhere to while driving. As an exsample; I never cross over the doulble yellow, never "over drive a corner, in slow out fast and never ever indanger other drivers and more. Oh and I am always very respectful.

Sounds like you forgot about the string between the accelerator pedal and the steering wheel.....

Mine had a lot of understeer dialed in from factory. Dealer realigned the car free of charge. Feels a lot better now. Have you had your alignment check?

62 in a 25 last week! I wasn't even pushing it. Damn, this car is deceptively fast. We'll see what happens.

I have a brother-in-law that is California Highway Patrol out of Portola California. I asked him if having a 11-99 Foundation license plate frame would help out if stopped for speeding. He said "what is the 11-99 Foundation?"

So there you have it. It may not work everywhere in California.

BTW, 11-99 is code for "officer down". The 11-99 Foundation provides support to the families of California Highway Patrol officers that have gone down in the line of duty.

Most CHP, but not all, know of the good work the Foundation does for the families of fallen officers. However, the license plate frame will do you no good if you don't have the badge to show the officer. Even then, it's no guarantee. It all depends on how much of a "bad boy" you've been.

As a side note, a LAPD officer let me off with a warning after seeing the badge in my wallet. He did ask about the foundation, thought their work/contribution was great and told me to slow down ..... I was happily surprised.

Interesting to hear some of the tactics used by some of the group. I drive a 993 on track and almost always use throttle to set-up, turn, apex, and track out. I usually set up a turn under throttle and dial back the slightest understreer with a throttle lift, but rarely due I wait to use the gas until I'm well into the apex. It does seem that the GT3 does not like to be steered under throttle as much as the 993, at least in stock alignment. I have a nasty case of getting on the gas early and have learned to manipulate circuits with this technique- I'm finding it very difficult with the GT3 due to the understeer.

Maybe an alignment will do the job.

you can get on throttle early, before apex, on 7gt3's. just have to set it up that way. my comment to snowboarder is due to my assumption that his car is most likely set up to push a lot more than what track drivers are used to.
