I just changed my oil and filled with Mobil 1 Supersyn 0W40. I also used that to top off the oil when it appeared to need it. I live in the Northeast so it makes sense to use the 0W40 to me. I will have to see how oil consumption goes and make a decision about the viscosity as my miles accumulate. I understand that these engines use the oil for cooling as well, so it also makes some sense that the lighter oils would be "easier" to pump around the engine and perhaps to spray on the backs of the pistons (if that is truly what this engine does). Mine used almost a quart during the first 1500 miles of driving.

FWIW this is a rather timely question since I was just trying to figure out what oil to use in my 993. This link may be helpful (or not). You may want to double-check though as I am not certain if there have been any updates since 1/05 which is the date of what I'm posting here.

No doubt the Dr Haas is a distinguished Doctor and surgeon and his degree is in biochemistry which is pretty close to whats in oil- I would just feel better when reading a 42 page presentation on oil- if a petroleum engineer or a Petroleum Phd. was the author.
The docs comments about ambient not being relevant were uhm eye opening.
Imagine me a electronics engineer with 15 years in GPS systems engineering writing a paper on heart surgery. I had read lots of papers on oil written by Engineers and I prefer those as reference.
When we were racing motocross there was alot of discussion over paying $8 for honda lube or $8 for yamalube. Mobil 1 was $4 back then and we wanted to use it in our racing bikes. The MX environment for motors is much tougher than a car motor environment . 12-13 thousand RPM and only a qt of oil in the motor-Dirt dust mud heat terrible.
Mobil one and other synthetics matched up well against the $8 oils like Honda oil and Yamalube and AMsoil etc etc. Do some research find out what the local guys use at the track and use that-- 0-40 Mobil 1 is a good choice. We used the mobil 15-50 here in the desert and Mobil discontinued it=THEN it came BACK!!! due to popular demand. thats my choice.
