930man - Michelin and Pirelli have R compounds in Porsche sizes for the 997. Dunno about slicks because I neveer use them. As to your comments about driving them to their limits .. there are a more than a half dozen guys in our PCA region who do it on a consistent basis. I think you might be surprised at how many people bought a GT3 because they want a car which they car drive to a track and still get near race-car performance. I wouldn't suggest to Larry Herman that he drives like a *****

Porsche is building cars for the broadest possbile market and hoping with a "refined" GT3 they will sell more cars and make more money. The GT3 will be for the guy who thinks the Turbo has gone soft. Hopefully a GT3 RS will come to the states and address the needs of those of us who want or are willing to accept a little less refinement for more performance.
I have my deposit down for the RS and hopefully will be driving it this time next year. Until then the GT2 will just have to do!

Supercup,
Dealers here in Montreal have confirmed that the Gt3RS is coming to Canada, I think this means they are coming to all of North America. I have my order in too. They will show up in the spring of 2007 according to local sources. Specs still unknown. I am hoping that you're right and that the GT3 is a softer car with broader appeal and that the RS will be for the hard core trackies.

I am still trying to understand the logic in trading up for an RS. Assume by the time the RS comes out 996 GT3 are worth $80k. I half understand the logic in trading up for a 997 GT3 (if it was supposed to be THE CAR those that hoped it would be) for $105k, but an RS that comes in at $125k that is a $45k premium over what is already a proven kick *** car.

Porsche have smarter people working their advertising department then their engineering. They load up the regular GT3 with a bunch of crap [sunroof] then remove that same junk from the "lightweight" version, call it the RS and sell it to the US market to store in their garages as collectors' items. The 997GT3 with a sunroof is no GT3, it's really just what the 911S should be [dry-sump]; and the RS is what the regular 997GT3 should be, but you can't sell a GT3 at $130k unless you call it an RS.

Time to come back to reality:-
Why do you take rumor i.e. GT3 not available without sunroof, to be fact.
I think I'd wait for an official order sheet before I'd react..or even respond.

Holger - I think you nailed it. That makes sense.
Metal - If you are correct, and if the buying public goes for it, bravo to Porsche. They nailed it again.
I really thought I was missing something here.

If I ever used logic in my car purchasing ways, I would have alot more $$$ in the bank or somewhere LOGICAL like real estate.

I really don't give a rat's *** what they call it as long as we (purists/track junkies) get what we want...
A light weight, hardcore, stiff as hell, no sunroof, no sound deadning track car that can be driven on the road, NOT the other way around.
I want a car that most people will say, "that guy is just f#@^&! nuts driving that on public roads, its just too harsh, too loud, and has no creature comforts!"
