[QUOTE=boostedt0y;17969355]Recent stable included a 997.2 gt3, 964, and Longhood 911. Overlap between ownership was about 4 years so was fun to drive the diff generations back to back.
997 was my track car with full monoball suspension, jrz, cup steering wheel, 2 pc floating rotors 996 cup shifter etc, cup exhaust, lwfw, halo seat, etc.
964 is sorted as well with RS sway bars and engine mounts, upgraded bushings, 996 cup steering wheel, 2 way coilovers, chip, intake, exhaust blah blah
longhood 911 is hot rodded with a hot 2.7 Rs engine build, brakes from a SC 911, upgraded shifter, lsd, and fully sorted suspension. Think 964 power at 2100 pounds.
for pure street fun, I’ll take the Longhood 911. With no abs, non power assisted brakes, manual steering rack, and no driver aids, it is the purest drivers car I have experienced. The thing feels like a go kart and is so much fun to hoon around with in the canyons.
with the power to weight ratio, the car has no issues keeping up with more modern cars in the canyons albeit it takes some effort. But that’s part of the enjoyment. You’re in complete control and the majority of the performance is accessible on the street.
oh let’s not forget the sound. While the gt3 sounds amazing, there’s something about these old mag case 911 engines that make my spine tingle. The wot induction sound from the 46mm carbs and exhaust is something else.
the gt3 has recently left my garage as it was becoming more difficult to attend track days with family commitments and I found myself always reaching for the aircooled keys for weekend drives. It was replaced by a fiat though
Great lineup of cars and that longhood sounds like a dream. The only let down for me personally is the 915 box in the older cars. But, on the other hand we are talking feel when it comes to street driving. So all of a sudden that extra time it takes to change from 2nd to 3rd is not that important.
Would love to hear more about that car and the 964.

Thank you! The 915 gearbox is def polarizing. When I first drove a Longhood that wasn’t sorted one of the thoughts that came to mind is how disappointing the 915 box is. However, with a wevo shifter and a wevo shift coupler the shifting is vastly improved. While you can’t rush the shifts like a modern gearbox, it is very direct and mechanical in nature. The wevo mods make the gear box much more enjoyable.
let me know if you have any particular questions about the 964 and Longhood. I don’t want to clutter the thread with my random thoughts about the cars lol. But here are some gratuitous pics of the Longhood

That 964 is the poster child for what I'd like to build some day.
So hard to put emotions/feel into words, Something about the 964 and it’s interior/size that makes you feel more a part of the car. Like it wraps around you. I don’t get the same feeling in the 996/997/991/992.
I drive 85Gold (rennlisters) old 996gt3 as my track car. It’s fully caged and highly modified. Still has a license plate that is a huge advantage over here in Europe. Especially at the Nurburgring.
I bought the 996gt3rs as an investment many years ago when I saw what happened to the value of the 997gt3rs4.0. So to be honest it rarely sees the road.
The plan is however to make a few YouTube clips later this spring.
Stock 996gt3MK1 vs my 996gt3Mk2 (track car) vs 996gt3rs.
and another episode with 964 vs 964 vs 964rs. All very different setups.
Not a YouTuber so please don’t laugh to hard when we release these videos.
I would love to get my hands on a 996 gt3rs. Appreciate you’re experience and insight. Looking forward to the YouTube videos. I’m sure there are a lot of people that would be interested in technical details and driving characteristics.
I guess it depends on where you live and drive. The goal of my 964 c2 is to make it drive similar to this 964rs. Works really well on small backroads and the Autobahn.
Perspective changes over time, if you would have asked me 15years ago and 100track days ago I would have picked a car with more hp even for street driving. A car with 300hp can still be fun to drive at 8/10 on the road. A 500hp at 8/10 on the road and you going crazy fast.
The 964rs is a better road car than the 996rs
Gorgeous picture! I agree about time, perspective and experience. It has changed me as well. I can’t really use 500 and 600+ horsepower cars on the road in the way they were meant to be used. I like old tech as well and enjoy learning about the cars. Those wheels look spectacular against the red. What type are they?

the hot rod sounds amazing! Feel free to share whatever insights you’ve had on going this route. One thing I see that is fairly compelling is the 991 and on versions are not seeing much action in this poll. Maybe it would be different if I posted this in the other forums? Magnificent write up on the long hood.
Boosted, I too got bit by the longhood bug years ago. Total pita but nothing I've owned has ever been more fun to drive on street in anger including 997rs and 964rs. Those 911's were AMAZING but they have all left my garage because nothing continued to captivate me like a well sorted long hood. And the only other Porsche that has stayed with me outside of a 65-73 911 is CGT. for COMPLETELY different reasons those are the peak thrills-on-street for me. I don't expect anyone else to share the same opinion; its just my opinion after cycling thru a lot of stuff. I was going to hold off throwing in my vote because this is a modern GT forum and a long hood is an antique by comparison. For me the greatest drivers 911 is a well sorted "OG". Nothin else like it imo.

glad I’m not the only one.
if you’re the type that is ok with putting work into a car and dealing with old car issues in exchange for a pure driving experience, there’s nothing like a Longhood 911.
if you want the aircooled charm with some modern civility, the 964 is the ticket imo.
if you want modern water cooled that is driver focused then 7 gt3/rs is for you.
imo 991 gt3/Rs while extremely fast is too dr jeykle/mr Hyde for my taste.
For my weekend toy I want it mr Hyde all the time. Call me a masochist but I enjoy feeling a bit beat up and spent after a spirited driving session. Never really got that from the 991 gen while on the street. That gen needs to be on track to really exploit the performance imo.
Best drivers 911 for me is the 997 RS, followed closely by the 964 (not an RS) ...991 RS is a great car, but a little too good, and too capable, to be considered an exciting drivers car on the street.

the long hood bug bit me too! I have a 67 sports purpose rally build with a 2.7 RS spec motor. Nothing beats it for fun on the street. The dogleg 901 gearbox is a little sticky when cold but once there’s some heat in thr transmission there’s nothing more rewarding when you get it right. The sounds, the smells, the steering feel all make a drive at even just 5/10 a blast. I still love my 997.1 RS but 9 times out of 10 I’ll reach for the long hood keys for a early morning canyon run
