I have what I would consider to be an amateur/dumb question so I'm going to ask it.

I'm 6'3" and trying to figure out my ideal driver position/gear and I'm having a hard time deciding on what shoes work for Heal/Toe. I have a pair of boat shoes that I wear that are cloth on top, they give me the best feel and I can easily role over to blip... but they cant be safe and they def aren't designed for this. But when I switch over to a real tennis shoes a have a hard time feeling the petal position, placing my foot in the right spot and have to consciously make sure I'm "high" on the break.

I get that I'm not using my heal enough based on where my shoe wear is but when I push myself closer to the steering wheel in what I would consider to be 'correct' based on the driving schools I've been to my knee is little too elevated to get to the right position... user error?

You can see where I've worn out the cloth exactly where I like to feel the pedal.

I've never owned real racing shoes, do they provide a better feel to be able to heal/toe?

 

Race shoes are great but I just can't do it unless I'm at the track. There are lots of stylish Piloti driving shoes that look like regular tennis shoes.
They have the rounded heal and a side patch for rolling on the gas.

Never had the opportunity to wear track shoes. However, my favorite casual shoe (Merrell Trail Glove 4) gives me the best feel for pedals. They are not firm enough for hiking, although they excel at rock hopping and beach jogging. Excellent grip climbing rocky terrain but provide little protection for the ankle.

Ya I second that! I'll shop for a pair now.

 

I have two pairs of Sparco shoes that I use to race with in my Spec Miata. I find them to be more difficult to use to heel toe because they cover your ankle. So unless you’re going racing, just stick with the low cut shoes like Piloti, Puma, etc. In my GT3, I like using skate shoes (Vans, Etnies, etc.). They all work fine.

 

for street driving i like worn-in Vans Sk8-Hi's. the vulcanize sole is thin and soft and there is no support; so sole under foot is even and thin. amazing feel for non-race shoe.

Anything that is close to "zero-lift" as possible. Some people like the barefoot style of shoes, but your foots will get tired 1/3 of the way through a DE. Especially on anything less than a dual mass flywheel.

Balance between the barefoot for going out on a spin to a nike "stylo" flat shoe with placement as close to the sole as humanly possible if doing DE (or like extended driving).

The version 1 trail gloves are the best. 2-3 sucked badly.

 

I always found my Piloti and MOMO shoes to be great on and off track.

 

thx I ordered the Piloti Endurance, hopefully gives me what I need. So your saying the SMFW gets tiresome, the blip sensitivity makes it more work? Reason I ask is that I’ve contemplated many times upgrading to the 4.0 clutch/fw because I struggled with the rev lag for the longest time… but I’m used to it now.

 

Not hard. Can heel toe and drive bare foot, in rainbow flip,flops, vans slip ons, converse …. Doesn’t matter.

don’t think too much. Just drive the car.
