My take is if you specifically really like the Gray Black .2 RS, go that direction. I think both are great cars. But I think if that is the one you like the most, if you end up with a .1 Pumpkin, you'll probably be thinking about the Gray Black car.
My favorite spec on any 997RS is the Pumpkin. I also don't need the quickest car out there, so for me the .1 would be fine. So I'd probably go in that direction if I was buying.
I wouldn't be super concerned with maintenance on either. My best advice, if you don't want to deal with as many maintenance items long term is right when you get the car, drop the engine, do the coolant lines and anything else that it may need in the next 5 years. Not because the coolant lines are going to fail on you right away, but simply because you're setting yourself up for an ownership experience that is mostly just oil changes.

I'm gonna try to drive a .1 in the near future for comparison sake. Great recommendation about if I buy a .2 to immediately sort out the Coolant Lines and Cam Actuator Bolt. I like the idea about having peace of mind. I'll make sure to have money set aside after the purchase to do this. I'm with ya on the Pumpkin. What an outstanding looking car. I came up on one being towed on the 210 a few weeks ago east of LA. I slowed down and followed it for 5 or 6 miles as it just looked so damn good and I wanted to take it in.
I was in the same boat and ended up with a 997.1, for me it was about the simplicity both of the mechanicals and the overall look. I think I found a car that I can keep and pass on to my kid and for future maintenance reasons as well as fewer things to break i stuck with the .1. Did not want centerlocks...The 3.6 is really fun on the street, plenty of power to get in trouble yet not overwhelming like my previous GT2. All you need is a bypass...

That's the way to do it. Keep it in the family to pass on. Most of the 911 range is quite robust and can easily do such. Gotta remember to every once in a while give the ol' Italian tune-up for grins and that chuckle.....got to experience that with my wife for a Cali lockdown pizza date.....
The best advice I was given and can pass on is to buy the very best one you can afford while compromising as little as possible. Either works. It's not sacrilege to open the box up on the .1 and get the gearing to how it should have been. Word of mouth passes quick when you want something unique if you research enough and present yourself an enthusiast and not flipper.
I prefer the .2 for multiple reasons. Biggest was the factory wheels and bucket seats. On the .1 they really age the car in my opinion, and the adaptive seats just don’t look aggressive enough for the rest of the package. I know both of these items are easily changed but that requires extra funds which the .2’s already have included. And the extra powa from the 3.8 is substantial over the 3.6. I have not driven a .1 RS but I have the base GT3 which has the same 415hp. Obviously I’d be loving every mile of a .1 if I had that instead. The black .1 RS that recently sold on BaT is local to me. He’s got it on a trailer bringing her home. Will do some pics together and see how they compare side by side🤙🏼
I chose the 997-2. It's the better car for the gear ratios alone. That literally transforms the experience. The extra torque doesn't suck either. Neither do the second gen ceramic brakes. Or the bucket seats. Or upgraded interior and electronics. I also prefer the looks but that's subjective. I've been fortunate to have the car for 5 years now, longer than any other vehicle I've owned and have zero regrets.

The right answer to this question is "the one in your garage" but I stick with the .2 for Ilko's reasons. Also owned it now longer than I've owned any other "fun" car in my past.

however the technology also continues to evolve and this is where things get tricky for many. people new to Porsche (and GT cars) tend to want the "fastest" or newest
I prefer the 997 platform, and I like the .1 (on my 3rd) - I know the .2 will perform better (specs-wise, not sure I'd be any faster) but the CL killed it for me. trust me, you will love either
I personally love the .1RS look better than .2RS, it looks more aggressive to me. Although I have a .2 nonRS, I think would trade my car in for this white/black color or silver/black. Green/black is my fav, but I can't justify the extra 50k premium!!
Don't forget the 997.2RS pressure plate issues we heard so much about. I have nearly 40K miles on my 997.1RS. Knock on wood, it has been stone-ax reliable. Granted, I don't track or really frag mine, but it gets a good workout every so often. I had CMS install a Guard diff internals, and had them modify the trans to match the ratios of the 997.2RS exactly (incl the R&P). It really livens it up, and allows that little 3.6 screamer to better use its lesser torque. Personally, Regarding the 997.2, I would think the CL wheels are a major PITA for a normal owner/tinkerer, ohh...but that rear wing sure does have a nice LeMans-ish appeal to it!!
minutes on the CL for me, and I'm a DIY backyard mechanic. Love em,... & I have plenty of 5 lug cars. For the track sure. But as a hobbyist, they're easy.
I'm a .2 guy in every way, shape & form, & Ilko said it best (for me). But again we are all splitting hairs as both are SO GOOD that we can't go wrong. That's what makes the 997 so damn good
