What else is she considering? Need the 4 seats and a large trunk? Or will 2 seats do?

Ive owned an E60 M5 and was a big mistake trading it to a 991 GT3.
Now I am left with my E39 and F10 M5. If I could pull back time I should not have traded it. It was an SMG.
I traded it to a 991 GT3 then sold the GT3 in 3 months.
I am not one of the people who dislike the SMG on the V10 M5. I love it. Its a manual without a third pedal. Best manual transmission for a GT car.
My E39 now I drive in a weekend and not anymore in traffic. Its too special for me. When I say special, its SPECIAL.
As a modern M5, my F10 is one of the best M5 to date. Its a manual, with CCB, competition package and all packages from factory. The only one faster than it is our 997 TTS. To say its boring is not accurate IMO. I drive it as often as I can but driving 80 miles daily is putting too much miles on it but I cant help it. I drive it 2/week and always in awe everytime. It gives the 997 turbo a partner as a DD. If you decide an F10, get the B&O sound system, its one of the best ived listened music with.

F10 M5 produce a very weird exhaust sound for a V8. I like them, but they are too big. Driven a few E60 M5 with a SMG. I love the V10 and would put up with dealing with rod bearings, but I feel the SMG ruins the rest of the car.
With the direction BMW are going, Id prefer a C63/E63 AMG or maybe a S6.

I have had several M5's which were manual and they were great. My suggestion is to try a 550 X Drive M sport and install a Dinan tune which is what I did on my F10, 500 Hp with 500 ft torque and all wheel drive. Love the car as much as the M5's and a little easier on the budget.

she currently in a XC70, and loves it, it has been a great car but damn, time for a change girl - so I'm looking at various cars
I think she fine without a wagon (no need anymore for that much space - for work) and I'd like to find her something a little more fun as I'll drive it too during winter

I had one of the first USA E39 M5 delivered in 2000...awesome car. Honest 6 speed, 400 naturally aspirated V8 horsepower, neutral handling, reasonable weight, straightforward interior. Hard not to recommend.
A few gripes of course... the nav was bad even it that era, traction control too conservative, the stick had longish throw, and if I recall there was a VANOS (variable valve/intake) thing requiring attention.

was working on/driving 3 gen of 5'er yesterday, e39, e60, f10 ... e39 is the winner for experience, e60 the one to own for a daily...535i or 550i would probably be bet choice for daily, still fast sedans and easy to own.. 2010 has updated iDrive and enjoy using it. f10 lost a lot of it 5'er roots IMHO, nice sedan but doesn't have the connection

Source a great E39 M5, swap out the nav/radio unit, and have what will likely be considered the best sport sedan of all time... an intercontinental cruiser and properly engaging on a backroad. All with a handsome traditional interior, without all the electronic BS which never ages well and will be the cause of untold headaches. Whether the wife thinks this is a great idea is probably related to how much she understands why you think Porsche GT cars are awesome.

I've put about 10k miles on a 2015 M5 in the past 9 months here are my thoughts:
wicked fast and fun in a straight line
love being able to change all of the settings
comfortable all day long (500 mile trips)
love the 21 gallon tank and 24 mpg on the highway including frequent high speed bursts
DCT is fun but its no PDK
huge depreciation meant I got it for a steal
disable the active sound by pulling the fuse you will like the car a lot more with it off
go for the 343M wheels not the competition pack wheels 601m the former are forged and theyve taken major hits from NE roads without a problem so far
AC went bad (all F10 5 series are affected with these issues) but fixed under warranty
car doesnt communicate well and I don't feel confident chucking into corners so it's been my mile munching express car
drivetrain malfunction light came on once but I still had full power and never experienced it again
After this car I'm looking at a w222 s63 and I'll probably stick to that range indefinitely for my sedan needs
