Default Post Deployment Toy...997.2 C2S/C4S or 991??

Then again... 2009 997.1 Turbo...? Gentleman, impart your knowledge on a young(**** I'm almost 30 am I still young?) pilot trying to make his way in the world. This fall I will be back from a combat deployment and since I just sold my 987 Cayman S, I feel as though its time to dive into the 911 waters and see how it feels. Unless I found someone that loves the military, doesn't care about money, and wants to hook me up with their GT4 because their 911R is their new favorite car...

So my price max is ~$70k and options I must have are...
Manual Transmission
Sport Chrono
Coupe
Black Interior
Black exterior(any red or blue is also a possibility)
Heated/Cooled Seats(it gets hot in NC and cooled seats after a workout is glorious)
Bluetooth/XM Radio
Power Seats

Would like to have are:
Heated/Cooled Seats(it gets hot in NC and cooled seats after a workout is glorious)
PDLS
SPASM
PSE
Turbo 2 Wheels for 997.2

Now I know for around 55k I can find a 997.2 C2S and 60k a 997.2 C4S, I love the look of the wider end and insurance for a C4S vs C2S is an almost $150 a month difference, but also know that a true sports car is RWD. 991 is a little harder to find for around ~70k, I'd be looking for a 2012.5 or 2013, any model under 40k miles..20-30k preferred. Also looking for something with a good resale value, since I generally only keep a car for a year or two before switching(B5 Audi S4 to E39 BMW M5 to 987.2 Cayman S)

Type of driving you ask? Well I put about 25,000 miles on my bikes throughout the year and only 7k or 8k on the car...but I want a car I can take to the track a few times a year. I take all the Ducati's to the track, so its high time to learn how to drive a car on one! Otherwise its going to be used for nice weekends, and taking the lady of the week out on a nice date. Maybe a few trips from NC to Florida or NC to MD(GO NAVY BEAT ARMY)/NY.

Modifications I would do?
Lowering springs
Tubi Exhaust(if it doesn't have PSE, if it does then just Sharkwerks X Pipe)
Wheel Spacers
Evolution Motorsports Tune
IPD Plenum

So, what should I do? I have 6 months to find my dream car...but I am torn if a 997.2 or 991.1 is in the cards for me?? Currently learning towards a 2011 C2S I found with 37k miles, pristine condition, and high $50s

997.2 GTS. Gives you the widebody and rear wheel drive, the newer DFI motor, and a vehicle that won't depreciate much. You need to drive both a 997 and 991 to determine which one you want - the 997 is more classic 911 with the smaller size, hydraulic steering, right mix of old-school guages and cabin feel with modern tech (except for the PCM system). The 991 is bigger, has more tech, electric steering, more GT than true sports car, etc. The 991 isn't for me, but there are others that love it and have moved from the 997 to the 991.

Exact car I'm looking for too. And I suspect others. That's going to be an extremely quick sale when it pops up. Good luck!

Like Mick said...no easy choice.

997.1 or .2 TT would be the way to go...

The 991 is a nice car, but unless its a 991TT, it wouldn't be worth it.

I have a 997.1 C4S and I've driven other C2S cars, and I'm partial to AWD, so I love it. If you like RWD, the GTS like Petza said is the way to go.

I don't envy you on trying to find the perfect 911 for you...just in the end, test whatever you can and see what you like.

All of the cars you're considering are fantastic so there is no wrong choice here. I'd say you do need to test drive them to get a better feel. I've personally tested the following Porsches

993 Carrera (6speed)
997.1S (6speed)
997.1 TT (6speed)
997.2 GTS (PDK)
997.2 TT (PDK)
987 Cayman (PDK)

For me the most enjoyable driver's car out of this list surprisingly was the 997.1S 6 speed with PCCB. Still i'd be happy to own any of the above - all are awesome.

OP - fellow grad - other academy. I was at the dealership yesterday and there was a 996 sitting next to a 991. The 991 is really enormous. I've had 993's prior to my current and no matter what the pricing I couldn't drive a Carrera any bigger than a 997. GL

why 150 extra per month for c4s? Doesn't make sense ....love my c4s, there are no "bad choices" only personal preference

The C2S was about 50 more a month for a 997.2 and 150 more a month for a 991. The C4S for both model types were about 110 a month for me via USAA. JKW...please don't say the school near the Hudson

If you want a well-rounded set of responses, you should post this on the 991 forum as well.

After reading the following, I would lean to a 991. In my opinion, it checks the "nice weekends", "nice date" and "long trip" boxes better than the 997. The disadvantage relative to the 997 would be depreciation, since the 997 is further down the curve and closer to flattening out.

I would also question your assumption that rear wheel drive makes a better sports car, particularly if you want to track it. I am on my fifth 911, one of which was a 996 Carrera 4. I was pleasantly surprised by the all wheel drive characteristics of the 911, and actually preferred driving it to my rear wheel drive 996. This opens the 997 turbo as an option, too.

Whatever your decision, you will love the outcome. These are all great cars - you can't lose.

The 997.2 C4S has the same transmission and AWD as the 997.1 turbo and the same brakes. You really can't feel it switch power around when it kicks in. If you are used to jets then you will want the turbo. I remember when the first Hornets showed up a Pax river and we watched them fly in. Watching the cat shoot off down there at lunch was a fun thing to do too.

USMA grad here heh

991- more comfy, more refined on inside, bigger
997- less comfy, less refined, smaller (more or less power depending on S versus non-S, and .2 or .1) I recommend a .2 if you go 997.1 carrera.

If you go turbo, something I noticed driving my Boss's turbo (a major in the Army) is that it is heavier and feels it, but the 4wd is kind of neat and it felt fast. Much faster. However, I did like that my carreraS still felt more toss-able, driving them side by side.

The differences are negligible. 997.1 Turbo with 6MT will be the best value around 60-70k imo, because I think they will become collectible. Just don't get a convertible (for many reasons not just value!)

So after some more research, it is looking like a GTS is what I would be happiest with. Too bad they are impossible to find.
