I not only purchased the C4S sight unseen but had it shipped from Manhattan, NY to Victoria, Texas, so my first look at the car was when the shipper backed it out of the truck at the local WalMart parking lot.
I followed a lot of the advice posted above as nice C4S models do not last long at all. But also had several very long phone conversations with the seller who was on Rennlist. Car was EXACTLY as pictured in his "for sale" ad here on RL. I owned it for less than a year and have put about 6,000 miles on it since I got it. Love the car and had a great transaction to buy it.

Bought 2 sight unseen - a 7.1S and a .2S both were CPO. 1st seller lived 100's of miles from a dealer so I couldn't PPI but I sent him my durametric and the dme was clean. Had a body shop inspect the car and went from there. The 2nd one had 21k miles on the odo, was owned by an elderly couple previously and was CPO. had a 3rd party inspect the car and went from there.

Purchased my '06 997 c2s w/35K miles, sight unseen from Florida and had shipped to California. I bombarded the private seller with calls, questions, pics/videos and an extensive PPI. The time from payment until deliver was extremely nerve wracking... but all worked out well.

Make sure you do your research and know what issues to look for.

I've bought a three without looking but always with a PPI. I lived in that area for many years. Call the guys over at RAC performance and get them to check it over. Car looks gorgeous! Very similar to mine.

I bought my '06 C2S from an out-of-state Porsche dealer, CPO, with 12k miles in 2010. They shipped it to me and I saw it for the first time when it was offloaded from the truck
It's been a good car since, with 81k miles now, many on the track.

I am debating about doing this right now. Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this with a private seller who has a lien on the car?

Do I simply wire/send him the money, he pays off the car, sends me the title and i ship the car? How do I protect myself legally and the $100K I am about to send him?

Thanks!

Yes, possibly 20 times. Using ebay and other referral services. Drove at least 10 of them home 1000 to 3000 miles.
had 2 shipped across country. Sent my own courier on one.
Use Paypal or other service but I hate their fees. A certified check or direct transfer and the eefus is always on the buyer to pay first before delivery.

Bought my 997S sight unseen in 2009 from a private seller in Chicago, I was over 9,000 miles away. Saw it on Autotrader the day it was posted, exact spec I was looking for and 10,038 miles on the odo. Car was delivered in mint condition. It now has 92,000 miles.

Arrange it through the bank (lien holder). You pay-off the lien directly. They can walk you through it and handle the transaction.

Was this at Porsche of Colorado Springs? I spotted a perfect 4S there a couple of months ago. Nice buy.

Bought mine sight unseen too. Granted it ll started here on Rennlist when I started talking with the previous owner. I hemmed and hawed as I had never bought one like this before. He traded it to a dealer in Miami for a beautiful turbo and I swooped in and got it from them. No regrets at all. He had all the records and it is a beautiful car.

I live in DC, the car was in Chicago. I didn't know about PPI at the time. I had lemon squad (lemon squad.com) send someone out and inspect it, they gave it a good report. So I purchased the car then shipped it back. Shortly after I took it to a Porsche dealer near by, they were offering free inspections. They said the front pads would need to be changed in the next 3000 miles, other then that they said it looked great. I've been very happy with the car.

There are several was to go about it, but all are a bit complicated. Bottom line - You do not want to transfer money with the seller until the lien is removed by paying it up front and presenting you with a clean title.

But if that is not possible, the correct way is via an attorney Escrow Account or using a lien-payoff service that holds your money safely until the vehicle is paid off. An escrow service will manage the collection of the car payment from you as the buyer and will hold the car title until the transaction is complete. You can benefit from using an escrow service because the service provider takes responsibility for the Lein payoff process, works with the seller’s Lein holder, ensures a safe and fair transaction and provides essential paperwork for the sale of the car between parties. It's an added cost, but well worth it if you want the car.
