Got a 2009 C4S on the way....from Carmax
So I'll see how it goes. Coming up to DC from Florida. One owner and 29K miles. Six speed and sports chrono and a few other options. Dealer serviced. If it checks out I'll buy it, if not I'm out the shipping fee. Roll that dice. I passed on the 08 TT since I was not wanting to get into the higher running costs and coolant pipe issues. I sort of like the normally aspirated engine better anyhow.

Shipping is 675 or so. This being my second 911 I'll know what to look for this time. In the DC region we have tons of local turbos and C2S for sale. But no 2009 and up C4S models. It's got the standard manual seats but that's ok. They weigh quite a bit less than the power seats. It's beige interior but I can add some black accent parts to break it up some. It's a Florida car so that's good too. No northeast salt and sand winters down there. Now I have to wait two weeks for it to get up here.....

Carmax is often a "dumping ground" for higher end cars that are just starting to exhibit signs of problems that the owner doesn't want to disclose via private sale. Since you know your way around a 997, you know what to look for, but as a warning to others shopping for their first 997, be especially careful if buying them from Carmax, especially 997.1 generation that could have IMS or bore scoring issues.

I've sold several cars to Carmax, simply because they've offered me more money than the dealer did on a potential trade in. Nothing to do with being a dumping ground for problem cars. It was simply a matter of more money, and convenience (tired of dealing with low ballers on craigslist).
I also bought my Targa 4S from Carmax. Just a coincidence. Not many Targa's out there, and mine showed up in a great color combination, and with the options I wanted. In addition, it was a low miles car (13,500 miles). I pulled the trigger as soon as I could.
Carmax doesn't let you do a PPI, but it has a 5 day no hassle return policy. I had my car checked out during that period, and everything checked out good.
Good luck with your car. I had a positive experience at Carmax, and I hope you do too.

Well its a 997.2....so less worries than a Carmax 997.1, which I agree could be risky. I will bring a mirror and light, and take a good look at the RMS along with CV boots and things like that when it gets here. Its got 29K miles and it was 50060.00 or something. Its a low option car, so thats why its a bit cheaper. Standard seats, no fancy carbon or suede details....all I wanted was sports chrono and six speed, with the PCM 3.0 with XM and Bluetooth. I'm not picky on colors either. It does have the round center sports steering wheel. As others have said, the local DC dealers run up the prices....I'm not paying Intersport, or Porsche of Tyson's, or of Arlington or Silver Spring for the same car but for 10K more dollars. I'm guessing I can get a good warranty from Carmax too....I'll find out. It was serviced at a place called The Collection in Coral Gables Florida, which is a high end dealer of new Porsche and other pricey cars. I'm hoping if I call them and be nice, they will send me the records. It was registered as a corporate car in MD but seemed to live its life in Florida. I have the Carfax.

I'll need a new lightswitch bezel and shifter ****/boot. No big deal or expense. I'll go with black.

I'm more interested in your decision to go with an '09 C4S over an '08 Turbo though, since I sorta/kinda just went the other way around ('09 CS to an '08 Turbo). Just like the characteristics of the NA engine better?

I get 72 hours to go see it when it gets here. They said 14 to 21 days to get to Md where the store is. I decided against the 08 TT as I did not want to deal with getting the pipes pinned and buying all the other pieces that go with really doing the job properly. It's more than 6k or so for it and it it fails while driving it can ruin the alternator and other systems. That's even more. I'll go get the DME scanned when it arrives. I can assess the other areas of the car. I'll look over the radiators for leaks and debris, brake pads and rotors, coolant tank and hoses, run the AC and heat, things like that.

I sold a 2011 GTI to Carmax, it didn't have any problems. I just didn't want it because the TTRS was back from its engine build. They gave me fair private party value for it too, and all in the most painless fashion I could imagine.
Good luck OP. looking forward to the report back on how it all went.

I almost bought an 09 Carrera S Cab from carmax a few weeks ago. Ended up going CPO instead. I was quoted $3,800 - $5,500 depending on deductible for carmax maxcare warranty and the car was $54k (plus shipping charge) with a lot of options. Had 20k miles on it. Went CPO option since that car had only 16k miles and got it for $57k (CPO so with Porsche 2 year warranty). In this case the CPO car was actually cheaper.
Pro with carmax is the warranty is longer up to 6 years 100k roughly. But with a CPO you get a lot more piece of mind (111 point checklist of things) I think on the current status of the car (I got new tires, brakes, 40k mile service, (by time) all service records, etc etc). Also, you can haggle with the dealership also where I don't think carmax moves on price.
