Default Some questions from a new owner

I just bought my first 911, 2008 C2s 17k miles. Have some questions..

1. When do you add oil? The gauge is in the second bar, 1 above the add line, should I wait or add some? .25 quart to move 1 bar?

2. My manual says Mobil 1 0w-40, but I have been reading that Mobil 1 is not as good as it used to be is this true? I am in South Florida. Is this the correct one?
Mobil 1...

3. Anyone have experience with FIRM in Central Florida? Seems like a blast...
Track Days....

BTW, don't know why I waited so long to test drive a 911!

Welcome and congrats on 911 ownership!

If your at the bottom bar it wouldn't hurt to add .25 to .50 quart. That should add a couple bars on the meter. Don't overfill, or you risk knocking out your AOS among other issues.

I've been using the Porsche recommended Mobil 1 0W-40 all 87,000 miles on my 911 - oil changes every 3k-5k miles, engine feels as strong as day one.

Post some pics when you can!

As another piece of advise. Don't check oil cold. Level is not correct unless the oil is at operating temperature. I really found out that the hard way.

Stay with Mobile 1. You won't go wrong.

Don't use Mobil 1 on the track ! Street driving OK, not a track oil.

Mobil 5W50 would be a good choice. Porsche A40 approved. Rinse & repeat every 5,000 miles. At minimum yearly if below 5k.

One bar is approx 340 ml.

Congrats on the new ride!

If you're gauge reads anywhere within the range, you're fine. Like Para82 said, it probably wouldn't hurt to add a little, but it's probably not needed. Some misc. advice I've gotten from other forum members:

1. Make sure your car is perfectly level when testing. Even a slight grade can give you a false reading.

2. Don't freak out if you get a reading that seems a little low. The reading can fluctuate a couple ticks on the gauge. Best to test it again next time you drive and see if it's consistently low. (unless of course you're getting a low oil warning) as long as you're anywhere within the bars on the gauge, you're fine.

3. when adding oil, add less than you think you need then re-test. You really don't want to overfill.

4. Ask your local porsche dealer what oil they recommend given your climate and driving habits. I'd guess they'll still reccomend Mobil 1 0W-40.

On a side note, if you just got the car and it has 17k miles on it, I'd bring it in for an oil change anyway. You probably have no idea when, if ever, the previous owner changed the oil. Best to treat your new ride with some fresh lube!

Down south, 5w-50 would be the best oil.

Change the oil on any used car purchase.

Oil level readings fluctuate, as water content in the oil goes up/down. Just drive the snot out after oil temps are up and burn off contaminants/water.

These engines love revs, and they run better when you wind them out regularly.

Enjoy.

Thanks for all the advice. I bought it from a porsche dealership and got the carfax and service history. They just did a 10k service on it, so they told me to come back in +10K. I figured I'd change it at +5K. I don't have any nice pictures yet, but here it is when I picked it up.

It will be my daily driver, although I'd like to take it out on the track just to see what it can do once or twice.....

I have an RND engine in mine and the thick instruction booklet that came with it says to check oil at ambient temp not operating temp. Also says to use Joe Gibbs DT40 (which is a 5W40).
Whereabouts are you in S FL? If E coast I can recommend a great indie shop. Also the PCA region (Gold Coast) is well worth joining. They have DE and track days since you're interested in that.

Oil level in the .1 cars should be checked cold, like first thing in the morning every day. On the .2 cars, it's checked hot.

If under a warranty, like CPO, use Motul xcess 8100 5W/40 which is Porsche A40 approved. If not, use Joe Gibbs Driven DT40. Change it every 4,000-5,000 miles - no longer.

Not what I've been told AND not what I've experienced in my .1. Always at temp!! Cold is not the accurate reading. You might want to check that.

Dealer told me come by and we'll top it off if it needs it for free... Free is for me, it is right next to my office, so I'll do that for a while to get a feel...

A couple mores questions...

1. Looks like there is a dirty water stain mid-car on the garage floor. Dealer said it was condensation from A/C and not to worry. Should I worry?

2. After washing the car, there is always water in the door sills when I open the car. Normal? Worry about weather stripping?

Both normal. Don't worry.
