Looking to Buy a 997
Hi All,
i am looking to make the jump from my 08 Cayenne GTS to a 997.
I have a couple of quick and hopefully not to stupid questions.
As of now I have only driven a 2010 S. (sadly it was beat, no history, cracked window and chipped up hood). Is there an easy comparison between the S and 4 S? What would I be giving up/ gaining either?
I am thinking I want to get at least a 2009 though there is a 2008 im debating driving 4 hours to look at? Year wise are there any option or issues I should be looking for?
I know PPI but any other advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

09 up are different cars , they have 3.8 dfi engine and pdk trans. I traded in my 3.6 tip for one because they were that much better
always buy an S to get the better engine and a 4s to get widebody and better all weather drivability

^ I echo the above. If you're anticipating driving much in auto mode, say for commuting, PDK is the way to go IMO.
I test drove a 4 vs base 997s and found the former to be much more well planted & confidence inspiring. I'd definitely up-spend for the AWD versions of the n.a. 911s. In the end though, I wanted at least an S but could not find a 4S in my desired color combo, so I bought a 2S. But, since we have mild winters down here, and it's not a DD, AWD was not a top priority for me.
This brings me to my # 1 piece of free advice: test drive as many as you can lay your hands on, to get an idea of the various nuances of the different trim levels. This will help establish a baseline for which models you do/not want to consider. It'll also give you an idea of dealers you want to do business with. Or not.
If it's in your budget, I would get a .2 versus a .1 for all the improvements. But, there's no wrong answer here, they are all great cars. Just make a list of must-have options, get your financing, insurance, etc. prepped and sorted, keep searching the internet, and when you find the one, pounce!!

The clear advantages of the .2 over the .1 are the engine design (and no IMS bearing concerns with the .2 DFI engine) and the PCM 3.0 system (bluetooth connectivity and XM radio). Minor items are cosmetic - silver plastic (.1) vs black plastic (.2), LED lighting (.2).
Your decision point 2S vs 4S can only be answered by you after driving both and considering the chance of inclement weather driving (snow, rain). Forum members may argue potential higher maintenance costs for the 4S AWD system vs 2S RWD long-term, but...
Figure out what options are most important must-haves and what you can give up for the right car. For me, 997.2/S model/coupe/PDK/color/Sport Chrono/warranty were musts and 4S/2S/full leather/wheels/heated seats/ventilated seats/low miles were secondary wants. In retrospect, I would have held out for full leather interior.
Good luck.

Fixed it for you! Some of the above is subjective. I see no reason for all wheel drive in a 911. But again, my opinion.
Also, the current cost differential should factor into the 997.1 v .2 discussion. A 997.1 with a 4.0 engine build and upgraded PCM is more attractive to me than a 997.2. Similar money is spent. It's not for everyone, but I think there will be steeper depreciation on the 997.2 in the coming few years. The 997.1 is trading closer to their low values. The 'scored cylinder / iMS' hysteria is making them a little less attractive. They're currently not cool, which makes it a great time to buy. The bete noir for the 997.2 is yet to be known, so they're propped up a bit....for now.

Try to find some 4S's near you to drive. Ditto for the 2S. Your pulse rate and butt dyno will tell you which one is the one for you!
Good luck...T

If I knew last September what I know now I would have held out for full leather and maybe a few other options. I didn't know much, found a car I really liked with all of the essential options, got a perfect ppi from a P dealer, and have now enjoyed 9 months and 7000 miles. Another 997 would have to be very special to get me to part with this one. I would hate to spend a year or two lamenting the almost perfect one I might have let get away.

Enjoy the shopping process. Best way to decide is to drive them. Whether manual or PDK.. if the funds are available I'd advise going 09+.. Though 997.1 is still a great car, to be sure.
I had fun testing a 2011 C4S a couple years ago. Ended up going with a RWD car to maximize the fun but either one will be a good time.
