Did the 997.2 have the same PDK from 2009 - 2012? Or was there a year in there it had improvements?

So far from posts here i've got that 2009 is NOT a good PDK year and that it HAS to have sport mode in order to be fast....

"Improvements" in this case is a matter of preference. To me, the 2009 PDK was the best of the three versions I've tried. Until it broke and was replaced with an "upgraded" version. Hated it. Instead of snapping through the gears in what seemed like a millisecond, the new one rolled over in a lazy fashion that felt more like a regular automatic. Even in sport plus. Some guys still think this is an improvement but I disagree. It's smoother but I don't want smoothness and softness in my 911. The PDK in my current -11 GTS is almost as good as the -09 but still not as crisp as the original -09. I've told my dealer not to "upgrade" this one whenever it's in for service.

ALL PDK's must have the sport chrono option to do it justice. As I've said before, I'll never understand why PDK cars without that option were even sold to begin with. That's how bad they are.

For me the 09 with PDK was the best choice and even though it does not have the Chrono pack, I would hardly describe it as "bad" or "not a good year" it's only a matter of opinion, but I think they built it very well, chrono or not, it's very enjoyable to use in any case.

Now I really need to drive one. I want to like the PDK because that doubles my market when shopping for cars. I already know I like the 6sp and if I like the PDK too, I can focus on getting the other features I want without having to rule out 1/2 the cars. Sport chrono is one of my "must haves".

You will actually more than double your options.

It took me a long time to appreciate my PDK. It definitely was not love at first sight, beyond admiring the engineering behind the unit. But with 18 months of daily driving and 32K miles, yeah, I love it.

If you go this way be ready to have regrets. Also be ready to see those regrets diminish over time.

For me, it was a long term commitment ... I simply don't have enough feeling in my left leg to trust myself to negotiate a critical shift in the midst of a panic situation. OK, drop the drama a notch! Just getting a point across.

The above is just my experience. Of course, everyone will be different!

I believe you. The car I'm looking for is a C4S cab with leather and on those cars it seems like the majority are PDK. I appreciate your candor on the PDK experience and it makes me wonder about my situation. In my case it won't be a daily driver and I don't have any physical limitations. I too find the technology exciting and can imagine it's a different but equally rewarding drive experience. But, and it's a big one, my wife wants a 6sp, go figure. Hmmm.........

I thought they were effectively the same, but a parts number check shows otherwise. All prices are without a core swap. Here they are ordered by part number as best as I could put it together. The most interesting thing is that there is one variation that was only used in the 2009 C2S and C4S. All of the others were used in multiple years.

I love my 2009 PDK. On sport mode your neck will snap on the first few gears. I also love the explosions that the car makes while switching gears.

What are these explosions of which you speak?

It "sounds" like he is speaking of what I'd consider a quick exhaust "bark" or "pop" at the moment of shift, you sometimes hear it on race cars although this one is much less pronounced than a real race car. I assume it is due to a momentary bit of excess fuel burning off in the exhaust.

I sometimes hear this on my car mostly in Sport Plus. But I think it is likely you will only hear it if you have a center muffler bypass and a PSE in open mode or some other low-restriction muffler. I have the Sharkwerks/PSE combo and when manually shifting I use Sport Plus for the extra kick at shifts (although this kick was reduced when my PDK programming was updated during my recent PDK 6 year service).

Here is a video where you can hear it in Porsche race cars. Again these cars are more unmuffled than most of ours so our effect is less pronounced:
