Hi All,
I've been off of this forum for over a decade. So long that I had to register all over again as I don't have access to the email address I used back then. Anyway, I am just about ready to upgrade the exhaust on my 2005 Carrera S. Most of my experience with aftermarket modifications was with my 968s and 944s. I used B&B exhaust upgrades on those but am looking for recommendations from other 997 owners on a good combination of performance and sound at a reasonable price. So far I am leaning toward Fabspeed for the 997.

Welcome back to the forum. I have the Fabspeed X pipe on my 997 and I am happy with the sound. You may also want to do a search on the "Gundo" hack which is a modification to the existing side mufflers that also sounds great. I had a Gundo hack on a previous 997 and also pleased with the sound. Gundo hack is great bang for the buck and got mine done for about $250 at a local muffler shop.

I have the Gundo hack. I think it's a good compromise between price, resultant sound (not too loud; no droning), ease of installation (for those of us DIY-ers). I bought the modded mufflers off eBay for about $300. I installed them myself. Before I purchased the modded ones, I priced some local muffler shops at around $60-75 for the fabbing. They would have had no problem with me directing them during the actual fabrication. The only downside is they would have used alumunized pipe which likely wouldn't last as long as stainless (but probably still on the range of 10+ years in my warmer climate).
I do have the original mufflers for sale if anyone wants them.

Darin Fister has a shop in Brentwood that does a mod similar to the "gundo hack". You can check out his page on Facebook and a search on Rennlist. High quality weld, no drone, nice growl about 3,000 rpm. I'm guessing under $500.00 installed.

I've got X51 headers, FVD sport mufflers and cat delete pipes on my 06S and it is cup car loud. You've got to baby it around town to keep the noise level down, but everywhere else it's great.

I'm not crafty enough to get into cutting, chopping, welding, etc... I didn't know about Agency and will have to read more about those but the Fabspeed still seems like the easiest full kit without any risk of drama. I haven't had a chance to watch their videos and hear how it sounds. I don't want to attract a ton of attention with the sound but I want that sportier tone.

In my opinion, the fister / gundo hack/mod makes just as good sound as a "normal priced" exhaust system. Byt yourself some fancy pipes and mod the exhaust. You'll save ****loads of money.

If you have the OEM PSE, you can disconnect a wire and have it always on. If you don't have PSE, then Gundo/Fister is the cheapest way to replicated the PSE always on sound. You modify your existing mufflers by inserting a bypass pipe. Fister even has a core exchange program. This is a very popular mod.
Beyond that there are third parties such as Sharkwerks, FVD, AWE, and so on. Some are muffler only mods. Others include headers, cats or both. Personally I have OEM X51 headers, AWE cats and Fister modded mufflers. Its more aggressive than the OEM PSE alone but driveable in the neighborhood if you are easy on the throttle.

A first inexpensive step is Gundo or fister. It is perfect for feathering away in the morning without disturbing the neighbours. And when you push the throttle it comes alive, to be honest - there is a reason why so many people put the OEM PSE permanently on. I don't know exactly if I have Fister/Gundo or permanent OEM 996 PSE but they sound a bit similar to be honest.

I've got fabspeed headers with fabspeed xpipe & 200 cel cats. Also did the Fister sport mufflers which I think are great.
I love how it sounds.
Bang for the buck, fabspeed delivers. Price no object, I like Tubi & AWE, or custom fabricated stuff like they do at S Car Go in San Rafael.
I have an 06 C2S Cab.
