I was wondering if anybody has heard a Gundo Hacked car back to back with a PSE equipped car. Do they sound different? same? how so?
I have a 997.2 with a Fabspeed third muffler delete pipe. Now I want to modify the mufflers with a Gundo hack, or open the PSE plug on the mufflers and weld an outlet pipe from that location, thereby creating full time PSE.
I know there are numerous clips on U tube, but those are meaningless, I am more concerned about quality of exhaust note from the drivers seat.
They are very similar, with the true, full-time PSE plug hack being a little more grunty at a lower RPM, wherein the little bypass pipe hack (some say this is officially a gundo hack; some say it isn't), adds a nice growl at somewhat higher load/rpm.
Both are tame-to-modest, with nice tones. If you are a little more aggressive and adventurous, go the PSE hack route.
If you watch videos where the sound was recorded on a cell phone from the driver's seat, it will not capture what the driver hears. My car has the mufflers removed and two resonators in their place, and at 2500-3000 RPM you can't talk to someone in the passenger seat, and ears will start ringing, but using a video camera or cell phone, neither captures the growl. My car is 90% as loud as the full muffler delete.
You just need to hear different types in person -- Inside and out.
If you take a look at this video clip above (NOT FOR WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE BUT FOR THE QUALITY OF CRAFTSMANSHIP), you will see an example of Fister D's and Hankville Gundo hack.
If you're going to do either method, these two companies do it the best. Very nice welding done! You just need to pick which mod you want.
I have the Hanksville Gundo Hack, and I will tell you that the sound is really nice.
I also noticed that the sound changed over a bit of time (it got nicer) probably because exhaust soot or whatever build up inside the muffler took a little time to blow out (I'm sure that there will be a douche bag on here (there always is) to point out some silly reason that this can't happen or that there is no soot in the mufflers or whatever, but all I know is that the note changed a bit over time... who cares why!?
The main thing that you are going to have to consider is that you are really not going to hear much in the driver's seat when your windows are closed. Keep that in mind. Outside the car or in a tunnel, you will be in aural ecstasy.
I have Fabspeed center muffler delete plus Gundo Hack. I think Gundo Hack alone will sound like PSE but the Fabspeed centre muffler delete makes the exhaust sound more high pitched.
Like mentioned above my exhaust also changed after driving it for a bit. The tone came down... but it's still higher than OEM.
I had the gundo hack done at my local exhaust shop and compared it to my buddy's PSE and honestly was surprised to hear how incredibly similar the sounds were. I would not spend much on this, my local shop charged $150 or so to do the hack-- I didn't even remove the exhaust from the car.
Gundo hack involves welding, so I've opted for Sharkwerks center muffler bypass...being installed tomorrow morning. Together with my 997 GTS's PSE, I hear it should sound Mega I'll take video just before and after.

Gundo involves the side mufflers so with PSE that wasn't an option for you anyway. PSE + SW bypass is killer on the GTS. Just shy of 4K rpm is when the fun starts.

Please do! People have been telling me to install the Sharkwerk's bypass on my GTS with the PSE. I'm worried that it'll be too loud.

Seriously? Tinnitus (ringing) is symptomatic of ear injury. If you can't be heard above the noise, it likely exceeds 110 dB, a level capable of causing permanent hearing loss with exposure of as little as 30 minutes per day. If your ears are ringing after only a short exposure its almost certainly louder than that, and definitely harmful. If you're unsure of the sound level, the Radio Shack SPL meter is absurdly inexpensive.
Get one, and instead of "90% as loud as full muffler delete" you can say "120 dB!" They may be cheap but they last a long time. I've had mine over 15 years. The downside to this in your case, looking at the meter one day and realizing, "Hey, I used to be able to hear that ."

Changing the centre muffler doesn't do much. You will be back in a few weeks asking for suggestions on how to make the car louder... :P
The Centre Bypass doesn't really change the volume much... it more affects tone.
Disagree. I have stock PSE and recently switched out my center muffler for a center bypass made by B&B (functionally identical to Sharkwerks but close to half the price new). It both changed the tone AND made the exhaust significantly louder. My brother was recently following me in his 981 with the top up and with PSE open he could hear the exhaust over fairly loud music when I dipped into the throttle. The center bypass makes the difference between open and closed PSE more dramatic. For the poster above worried about volume, to me it is just right. I have a Alfa Romeo 4c with the racing exhaust and it is significantly louder than the Porsche. Also have a Lotus Evora with a 3rd cat bypass and the volume level is approximately the same as the Porsche. Very livable around town. However, the beauty of PSE is that if you ever want it quiet, just hit the button and close the muffler. Even with the bypass installed the car is then very civilized and the exhaust note is barely louder than stock. Car sounded decent without the center bypass. Car sounds amazing with the center bypass.
My 2012 GTS (manual) is at a Porsche shop getting Sharkwerks' center muffler bypass installed, As I Type! I took a video this morning at the shop, showing the "Before" sound with original PSE exhaust, flaps opened/closed. As soon as it's done, I'll take an After video, post on YouTube, and share the link.
The gundo hack can vary depending on the skill of the shop that does it and the size of the pipe used. For that reason I went with the Fister exhaust, and did it on a second set of cans just in case.
I needn't have worried. The sound is pretty darn close to PSE (and possibly identical) if the hack is done right. And Darin does it right. I kept the stock cans and they are just taking up space in my garage.
[And just to be clear - I'm not affiliated with Fister, just a very happy customer. ]
