Hello Rennlisters, I am the proud owner of a new-to-me 997.2 GTS! The car is great fun and I've had a huge smile plastered across my face since I picked it up.

Quite a few years back I had a Honda S2000 and added a cold air intake to the car. I really loved the induction noise of that motor. With the 911, at the top end of the RPM range I started to hear a similar sound albeit a bit muted, and it got me excited. Maybe I can be an induction noise junkie again...

With the X51 package on the 997.2, what can be done to enhance the induction noise either in general or in the cabin? For instance, do air filter replacements make a meaningful difference, or are there simple changes I can make to the system that will enhance the sound without compromising the performance of the system?

I expect reducing rear cabin insulation could do the job but with compromises. I didn't want to do anything before asking if I would be reinventing the wheel and seeing what others have learned. I also am aware of the positive reviews of the Sharkwerks aft muffler bypass, but if I can get additional induction noise I may be happy with the reasonably quiet PSE.

I did start off with forum searches both here and on 6speed, but if I proved to be a white belt at google-fu, I would appreciate being steered in the right direction. My search results were pretty crowded with discussions about purchasing the X51 kit or aftermarket alternatives. I think the system works great - I just want to hear it!

Install the Sharkworks bypass, unplug the PSE connector in the engine compartment, and you'll forget ever wanting to hear intake noise.

Do not change anything with the airbox... at all. You will only be wasting money, probably lowering performance and will not have any noticeable gain in induction dBs.

The X51 airbox already has holes cut in it (no joke) beneath each air filter on both ends of the airbox on the inboard side. Snapped into those holes are two very thin plastic screens that allow induction noise to penetrate the cabin.
If you take your airbox apart you can see them clearly.

You should have these but if you do not, the X51 box has an outline clearly designated where the holes can be DIY cut with a dremel and the screens retrofit.

So, the bottom line is you've got the best option you can have already with the X51 and the airbox screens.

Thanks for the responses, and nwGTS, thanks for the details. I suspected it wouldn't get much better than the X51 intake or I would have found something on the searches and everybody would have it.


I need to open up the spoiler at some point to check the gear lubrication anyway - now I have a good idea of what to expect and look for near the intake. This will make for some pleasant, easy wrenching on a Saturday. Also, I'm glad to hear the Sharkwerks bypass is good enough that I won't be missing much. I really didn't expect to enjoy the sound of the flat 6 as much as I do!

I took a few snaps today after cleaning the car up a bit. The background is terrible and the photography technique isn't much better, but at least the car looks great!

A few months ago I started looking at options for a 991 S with hardly any miles on it, thinking to spend ~$80k. A week or two back I started to get serious, and after a lot of thought I decided to just cut the budget in half with the idea of dropping my name in the hat for a GT3 if I enjoyed the Porsche thing. At that point I started looking at the 997.1 S. I ran across this GTS with 45k miles and a MT for sale in California. It ticked all the right boxes for me and I felt it was a good price ($58k+tax) - so I ended up flying down that night and driving it back home. I called the office around lunchtime and told them I'd be out for the day, and when I got back it was pretty clear what happened...

The car has really been a great deal of fun - loving the experience so far!

Well, good for me then! KBB shows the price to be in the range, but from those comments I must have done very well.

VERY well!!! A year ago, I paid $80k for a fully-loaded, CPOd, '12 GTS. We're near-twins. Mine had 41k miles, but it's PDK not MT.

Congrats! Amazing car and even better price. As others have said, you got yours for well below market value. I'd be ordering a set of Forgeline GA1Rs right about now, with what I "saved." Drive it in the best of health. Post photos anytime.
