Default 997.1 C4S tail light cracks

Hi,

I'm new to Rennlist but I've found many of the posts very helpful so today I thought I'd sign up.

Today when I walked passed the rear of my 997.1 C4S I noticed slight cracks along the seam between the white and red area. Since I'm very careful with my car this really bothers me, and I would like to ask if this is common and if anyone else has experienced this? I hope I managed to upload a photo of the cracks. Also, where is the best place to order a replacement that will fit on a European car?

I've had the same thought but I'm always very careful where I park the car and also I cannot see any other damage or scratches at all. Has this been presented on any other 997 out there?

I haven't seen that before. It's a good excuse to upgrade to the rear Dectane led lights

There are a couple of 997.1 taillight options for sale in the 6speed marketplace this morning, including an all red set and some LEDs - http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/f...splay.php?f=67

Thanks for the reply Petza914! However, I am a fan of the original look so I afraid I'll go for the OEM lights. Since no-one seems to recognize this issue as a common failure I can only assume that someone has been leaning om the car or pushed on the tail light when trying to move it (when being detailed). What a waste of €400...

Used rear OEM lights are sold frequently for about $200-$250 / pair by people who have done the update to the LED versions. You may want to post a WTB (Wanted To Buy) ad in the marketplace - I'm sure you'll get some responses.

I might try that! And I guess that the US spec in this case doesn't differ from a Euro-spec.

These seem to happen often to OEM taillamps as a result of age and heat from the bulbs.

For what it's worth, I bought an OEM taillight for $50 shipped on eBay.

I wish I could go with Dectane/Spyder/Depo LED taillights, but I don't trust the build quality, and I'm not anywhere near as handy with a soldering iron as I should be. For $600+, it's a waste of money.

I wouldn't lump Depo & Dectane in with Spyder - the build quality is nowhere near the same. The Spyders for the 997 are terrible- went through about a pair a month for 3-4 months where they kept sending replacements that would last another month. Finally upgraded both my cars to Dectanes and even though they were used when I bought them, have been great since. I do have a set of Spyders on my GMC Truck though and they've been flawless for 4 years - I think maybe the 997 electrical system is more sensitive which is why it kept throwing codes with them after time.

Used Dectanes are about $400-$450. New ones can be almost double that, but if you buy them from Del Rey Customs, they guarantee them for I think a year and will send you out a replacement set if you have any problem with them.

I like the rear LED with the faster illumination, different color turn signals, and shape of the LED arrays which is why I went with them. On my silver car, I also wanted lightly smoked versions and Dectane and Spyder were the only ones offering those, though I think Dectane has since stopped making both their smoke and clear rear versions and only offer Red or Red/Smoke.

I haven't seen cracks... but I the housing on my 997.2 did separate in that same area (between the clear and the red portions). Water ended up getting in the lights and the dealer replaced them for me.
